I'm looking for a used 8" SCT OTA for my CG5 mount and I had what seems to be a good idea. I decided on an EQ mounted SCT to leave the option open for astrophotography if I decided to pursue that later on. I'm thinking I could get a used NexStar and use the OTA on my CG5. The Nexstar OTA (other than the color) is the same as the other Celestron SCT OTA's right? Then, I could use the NexStar mount for a smaller OTA as a grab and go, go-to set up. I was thinking this mount would end up being cheaper than a Mini-Tower...
Since both systems use a dovetail, there's no reason why this wouldn't work right?

As long as the dovetail fits, then any OTA should fit your CG5. There are different dimension dovetails.

So I guess the question would be: Is the mount on the NexStars a standard design or is it unique?

I did something similar, and yes, the OTA's will fit both mounts. I originally bought the 6" SCT on the EQ mount, the C6S-GT. Later on I found a Nexstar SE mount for sale, and mounted the C6S OTA on it, leaving the CG-5ASGT mount free for use on my C6R refractor. And I now essentially have a Nexstar 6SE, but all in black (looks better than orange). here is a picture of those two, with a couple of others. I'm sure you can pick out which is which Doug

The dovetails used for the NexStar SEs and the CG5 models are the same format: Vixen.

It is a Great Idea and one Celestron has made a good amount of sales on.
I have the 4SE and am in the process of getting a 66mm,70mm,or 80mm refractor to use for widefield viewing, and in time, wide field Imaging.
I do have to admit the the Omni 127 has a very nice looking 5 inch SCT optical tube.I may have to see if there is an Omni 127 SCT optical tube for sale, without the CG-4 Mount.

Well...one word of caution, that may be is irrelevant, and is probably minor even if it is not...The Vixen style dovetail that goes on both the 6SE and the 6" SCT that goes on the CG5 are identical in size, but they are not positioned identically as I recall. The dovetails for these 2 optically identical scopes is positioned at 90 degrees different angle. The SE has its dovetail so it attaches from the side whereas the SCT designed for the GEM has its dovetail on the bottom.
Now this could only make a difference if the screws for mounting a finder place a scope designed for the different mount at an awkward position.
I once tried to put the 6" SCT from an SE on a Vixen Portamount and found the mounted finder was underneath the scope, and the direction the scope pointed could not be reversed to solve the issue. If you are relying on a tape mounted system like a Telrad, this is no problem.
Therefore the only minor problem might be the position of a screw mounted finder. A finder mounted on top of the scope or on the left or right is no problem, but underneath would be awkward.

OPT Corp sells the Omni 127 OTA by itself.
