My first ever Jupiter captures new
      #2546191 - 07/28/08 12:35 PM

Well, here are my first ever shots of Jupiter. They have gotten a bit better from the very first one but I have a long way to go learning focus, conditions, and processing.

My first ever Jupiter image!
AT80mm 5x barlow SPC-900-NC
~1000 frames stacked & processed in Registax4
05-JUL-08 08:21 UTC

My first GRS capture!
LX200R 12" SPC-900-NC
~800 frames stacked & processed in Registax4
14-JUL-08 07:24 UTC

I discovered the power of PixInsight for processing The frames for this image were captured just a few minutes before the last image's frames.
LX200R 12" SPC-900-NC
~800 frames stacked in Registax4 prcessed in PixInsight
14-JUL-08 07:21 UTC

Here I used ~800 frames the next picture I used only ~500 to see what the difference would be.
LX200R 12" SPC-900-NC
~800 frames stacked & rotated in Registax4 prcessed in PixInsight
20-JUL-08 06:22 UTC

Stacking about a third as many as the last image to see what the difference would be.
LX200R 12" SPC-900-NC
~500 frames stacked in Registax4 prcessed in PixInsight
20-JUL-08 06:30 UTC

Thanks for looking!

Well done, Adam! The third one is great.

Do you have a barlow? Stick it in! You'll get a bigger image scale and more resolution, but at the low altitude you'll also need better seeing.

Cheers Mike,

I did use a barlow on some shots for a larger image but the shorty I have isn't really a great quality one so I think I lost some detail there. I think I would like to go with a nice 3x. That should really help.
The seeing on the first couple was pretty bad. I would say maybe 3/10. Not to mention I have to image right through the light dome (and heat waves) of Denver since I am just north of the city.
The last two shots were from farther north in Longmont, CO so I didn't have as much LP to deal with though there was a 3/4 moon not too far away. The seeing that night was much better at maybe 7/10.
Colorado skies are clear most nights due the constantly changing weather patterns... BUT, this also makes for some VERY turbulent conditions and pretty buggered seeing most nights. *sigh*

I'll keep plugging away though. This is too much fun, especially after learning the basics of processing with PixInsight. I am really starting to like that program.

Awesome Images,Adam.
Those captures of Jupiter are excellent to say the least.
Excellent Work you are already looking like a Seasoned Vet in your Imaging Skills.
Thanks For Sharing.

Here is my latest Jupiter from last night (08/08/08) at 03:01 UTC. Seeing was horrible but I managed to get some more detail compared to my other images.
This time I used a 3x barlow and combined about 500 frames. I even managed to capture Europa on the left. Very cool!

Excellent work! I like the way you processed it, little or no noise. Nice color too.
