WOOT!..6 months trying, finally got ISS :) new
      #2561667 - 08/05/08 12:08 PM

Hi all...
Helped that I had a 89° pass so it was very bright at over -5 at epogee. I ended up having to use 1/20,000 sec exposure at full gain so stop the action which for my 80mm ED requires a very bright target since I used a 2x barlow. Using 1/10,000 of a second just gave a great brightness image but was failing in many frames to stop the motion blur.

Another thing I noticed is apparently the solar panels can swing to orient themselves to the sun (which makes sense ). Compare the panels parallel to the main body to Ralf's here which has them more perpendicular.
http://www.cloudynights.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/2551847/page/0/view/collapsed/sb/5/o/all/fpart/1

Orientation appears to change due to it flying overhead

Thanks for looking!...I can finally move on to other targets lol!

Thanks all. You can tell i'm proud to get this one outta the way lol....now i need to get it with the shuttle there

Adding a pic with a NASA image to show the orientation...keep in mind the NASA image is taken ABOVE the station by the shuttle and my image is from below. Suprised to see I got some detail on the Soyuz panels

Very impressive indeed! Especially for an 80mm aperture!

I'm up in Saugus a few miles N of Boston, and the pass here maxed out at 82°, probably reaching -3 mag. I imaged it with a C11 and DMK21AF04.AS webcam, tracking manually. I'll post the image to this forum shortly.

Really nicely done.Congrats.Your question:
''Another thing I noticed is apparently the solar panels can swing to orient themselves to the sun''

Thats indeed the case and one of the advantages of the new solar panels.Recently however, there was a problem with the Starboard solar wing;they had to fix some time and you could see that these panels were not moving along with the other wings.

Ralf

Thanks all

I noticed something however....look at the photo the shuttle took....look at the extension opposite the soyuz module....notice the destiny module attachment is pointing towards the single solar panel array.....in my image however, its pointing towards the doubles...wierd!

Interesting...

I guess either the module is movable.

Great observation!
