I went out and captured about a dozen clips of Jupiter tonight. Here is one that I have processed with the GRS just rising out of the left limb.
I had some 'onion rings' because I only saturated to ~150 on K3CCD. If I put the gain up 1 stop then it was overexposed, and I didn't want to decrease my exposure time and add even more gain. I used magic wand and gaussian blur to partially hide this.
C11 + 2.5x powermate + the 840K toucam that I firmware modified to a 900NC last night.

Great! I hear the rings are due to lack of exposure. Did you feel the original image was underexposed at all? It looks ok here, but I was wondering if it was that maybe you stretched the histo, levels or curves?

Yes Mike, I felt like it was a bit underexposed. I believe that the ideal exposure is to have the K3CCD expsore meter at about 220 (on a scale to 256) and I was at 150. With the Toucam control panel all of the settings are in stops that don't allow fine adjustment, and when I moved the gain up by the smallest amount that I could it would oversaturate. My other option was to decrease the exposure time and then use even more gain, but I decided to keep the exposures as long as I could. I might need to try something different when I am out next time.

Hi Kal, try VDub (freeware) instead of K3 for image acquisition, it allows me to make very tiny gain adjustments with my Philips SPC900NC webcam. Dan

I actually have Vdub already installed on my notebook - I use ot for my post processing to split the avi into seperate bitmap files. I'll have a play around with it to explore it's use as a capture software as well.
I processed another video, taken just after the first image I posted. I processed it in the same way as I processed my second image however - no waveletts at all in any part of my processing. I have stacked the frames in registax and saved with no waveletts, and then run a LR deconvolution in AstraImage on each of the red, green, and blue frames before combining the 3 colour panes and running a second pass LR deconvolution on the final colour image.

Kal, I really like your images. In regards to color, noise and contrast, I think you pushed each to an appropriate level to get the most out of what seeing allowed, out of a relatively outdated camera compared to results that others are producing with newer cameras. I'd love to see what you turned out with a camera that was uncompressed. Excellent results, regardless of seeing and equipment, images to be proud of.

I might very well move on to a better camera in the near future, but it's taken me a while to learn what I have learned so far. For the last year or so the camera has most definately not been the limiting factor for me, the user (me) has been the limiting factor, so it feels good to finally get to the crest of the learning curve where I feel as though I can move on with a better camera

Either way, those are outstanding results. I think you got the most out of your set-up. More than many do with higher dollar cameras.
