Hi David,

I bought one of Royce's first 10" F/20 D-K scopes and am very, very pleased with it. It is happiest under very good seeing and when that happens, the Royce is a stunning scope. Other Royce owners have commented to me: "These optics are terrific!...I've had the 10" f/20 out twice since coming back from WSP and BOTH nights were simply spectacular!!! Royce has a real winner here."

My experience under Southern California skies has been similar. When the seeing was very good in late Fall the Royce looked like my TMB 175 APO only brighter and with more planetary detail. I like it so much I am on the list for the 12.5" F/20. Bob is presently finalizing the design and it looks to be another very nice addition to the planetary observers arsenal.

Larry

Larry,

Do you have any information how Royce's 10inch F/20 DK compares to the Parallax Instruments' 10inch F/20 DK (which also uses optics made by Royce) ?
And how do you think a Parallax Instruments 16inch F/20 DK would perform?

Ralph

Hi Ralph,

Bob and Joe have different mechanical designs and Bob's OTA is lighter, something like 24 pounds to Joe's 40. Optically they should be very much the same, with the possible exceptionof diffration artifacts. I could not tell from Parallax website whether the secondary support is curved of straight. After using both, I prefer curved as it lessens perceived diffraction artifacts to near zero.

I would only be guessing at what a 16" F/20 would be like. At 8120mm focal length it would be a bear to find eyepieces for all but high power observing. Heck, a 40mm would be 230x and a 10mm 812x! But given very good or better seeing I would imagine the Moon, planets and globulars would be something to behold!

Hi Larry,

thanks for the response. Very good point you made about the diffraction issues /curved spiders.

If one would use a Harry Siebert hybrid diagonal with 2.7" inlet (would fit the 2.7" focuser of the Parallax scope) and 3" outlet, and then put in a Siebert 3" 120mm Observatory eyepiece, this scope/eyepiece combination would yield a magnification of 68x (6mm exit pupil) with a TFOV of 29 arcminutes (though the AFOV would be only 34 degrees!)
O.K., a pretty exotic and costly route to follow.
