Water smears inside tube...
      #2574797 - 08/11/08 04:42 PM

A picture is worth a 1000 words:

And this is on the inner tube:

This happened last winter, I was just starting out, and did not think about condensation.
Tube was outside at -20C, taken inside at +20C...
I did the mistake of laying the tube vertical (on it's lens cap).
Fortunately, nothing on the mirror, so maybe vertical was the right thing to do...

My question is... Is it worth bothering about it?
I have heard about "flocking" the inside of tubes...
With these conditions, that might not be a good idea, it would "retain" the humidity?
Is there an "easy" way to open the tube, without having to re-align everything?

Anyone else seen this before?

I would say let it dry out. I am sure it wont bother the performance of the scope, unless it bothers you.

It's not wet... (has been there for probably 8 months).

It won't hurt anything. Leave it alone.

Looks more like grease from the baffle tube. I've seen several other threads about grease doing this on some of the newer Celestrons. Apparently the quality of grease in use is different than it used to be. Here's a recent one:

Benoit,
This is oil that has separated from the grease behind the mirror.
1st. Check the threads currently addressing this in the Celestron Nexstar/CPC forums here.
2nd. You should probably remove the corrector and clean it up, especially off the baffle tube, as it will drip onto your corrector if pointed down. Before doing this get advice and instructions on the same forum.
3rd Don't store your scope corrector down. This grease will continue to drip. Store the scope horizontally or 45° up.

I've had the same problem, and it sounds like this is becoming very common. It's not a big deal to with.

makes sense... oil... that would explain why it's shiny.
Now my OTA is leaking oil, LOL (actually not funny, Im not really impressed with the Celestron quality...)

Under these circumstances, would it still make sense to flock the inside of the tube?

Well, the scope needs to be taken apart and the runny grease replaced.
I don't think there is much consensus as to whether flocking makes a noticeable difference in contrast, but it sure can't hurt.
