In my 12" scope at 600X, this nebula has a rectangular appearance, with a bow tie effect, one of the lobes has a brighter condensation, and 2 lobes are clearly visible, and with averted vision, a very faint haze surrounds the main body of this object, the SE lobe is smaller, and here are my notes for this object: very bright, rectangular shape, with a bow tie shape, brighter condensation on NW edge, very uneven in brightness, central star glimpsed in brief moments, aquamarine colored, elongated 15"X10" NW-SE, a threshold star lies about 45" WSW, at high power with averted vision, a faint outer halo becomes apparent, that makes the object look like it is encased in a faint rectangular haze, and doubles the size of the object...clear skies

891: let it rise. This is currently an am object for us. Resist the temptation to look for it when it is less than 30 degrees above the horizon.

18" (9/10/07): visible as a mag 8.5-9 "star" at 12.5x in the 80mm finder and easily identified using an OIII blink. At 175x in the 18-inch, appears as a small, very high surface brightness oval with a blue-green color. At 450x, this planetary is elongated 3:2 NW-SE, ~18"x12" and has an unusual bipolar appearance with two lobes. The 10" NW component has a very high surface brightness and contains a quasi-stellar brighter knot on its west edge. A fainter lobe juts out towards the SE and is slightly smaller (~8"). At 565x the SE lobe seems incomplete as if it was partially obscured and two lobes are encased in a thin outer envelope. The view was fascinating at 807x with the sense of peering at a 3-dimensional object - the brighter NW lobe being closer and the partially overlapping SE lobe extending away in space. At this power both lobes were clearly irregular in shape and surface brightness.

Just want to add my vote of confidence to Don's plaudits. Outstanding observation.

(I would like to point out that the observation I posted was made with an XT-8 from my urban backyard. I'll be putting the 22-inch on it next time... )

... and that's exactly what makes planetaries such as NGC 7027 so appealing -- high surface brightness makes for easy visibility in small scopes or urban settings, but also allows you to pump up the magnification in dark skies and reveal exquisite structure in larger scopes.

Like 750X in Steve Kennedy's 32" on NGC7009 (the Saturn Nebula): Kelly green, looks like a toy gyroscope with wings, and the central star is so bright it obscures the inner part of the nebula. Like this only greener: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Ngc7009.jpg
