Yeah. I have yet to see a large Dob (18-inches or over) with any sort of cooling fan mounted behind or in front of the mirror. I realize some scopes have these, maybe Obsessions come with a rear fan installed(?), and other ATMers add them.

All AstroSystems TeleKits have fans. I find them so critical that I've modified mine to improve airflow and add more fans.

There are many very insightful discussions on mirror thermal equilibrium on the Big Dob Yahoo! group. Check the archives there for many opinions.

I built the remote collimation system following the design described in an article by John Vanderbrugge in the November 2005 Sky & Telescope magazine. I forgot the name of the company I ordered the DC Gearhead Motors from -- it was the same company John V. used. They even have an online part calculator to determine the specific pulleys and belts required. One change I made from John's design was that I used much beefier parts -- the strongest DC Gearhead motors available and 3/8-inch belts and pulleys instead of 1/4 inch, which is what he used. John said that he had trouble with the belts stretching. Also, his mirror was 15 inches and mine was 22 inches.

This worked out so well that I encourage everyone who asks me about remote collimation to read John's article.

Brandon:

Thanks for the tip. I'll have to check out the Yahoo Big Dob group.
