Mexican Meeds OK!
      #2576348 - 08/12/08 11:40 AM

Yesterday, I was talking with Pete Peterson of Peterson Engineering, supplier of aftermarket accessories for SCT's for 17 years, and he told me that the Mexican-made 12" Meed LX200ACF scope I've ordered will likely have a better quality of manufacture than those previously built in Meed's Irvine, CA plant!

That's nice to hear!

(Meade purposely misspelled.)

I have to say, I was rather surprised with the LX200ACF/R I received as well. No visible grease or debris in the tube at all. It was in near-perfect condition, and the collimation was rather close right out of the box.

A couple welcome surprises I had: The standard tripod now uses a handle for the mounting bolt rather than the knob, and the mounting bolt is spring-loaded. Made things so much easier. Also, for some reason my 10" came with 2 sets of handles mounted on it rather than just 1 set.

QC still needs a bit of work to catch problems with the Chinese parts before it leaves the factory (seems like QC in Mexico doesn't test a couple things)... but otherwise the scope itself came in great shape.

That is nice to hear...but what did he say about the MEADE LX200s? That's what _I'm_ worried about!

Which LX200 are you referring to?

The LX200GPS?

I think the Honey drink is MEAD.

But, in any case, why wouldn't all the new Mexican produced Meades be of similar good quality?

At the end of the day, it's probably the design of the production line and the quality control supervision that governs the end-quality. As long as those are in place, it probably doesn't matter where a thing is made.

(Regardless of whether you are making Meade or Mead. )

Please guys don't tell me the new meades made in Mexico are going to have the same quality than the previous meades made at the state of the art factory in USA...

If that the case i never going to purchase any meade scope again... these days i can only believe in products made in China by Synta...

HEY ISRAMIREZ:

No...the new Mexican-made Meades will NOT have the same quality as those previously made in Irvine CA, in a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility.

They will have BETTER quality!

I think your friend meant that the quality will be "nack to normal", as it always was at the Irvine California plant.

The higher priced SCTs that meade makes only started having problems right before they left the irvine factor, and a little while after settling at their mexico plant.

Of course, we all probably knew that this was just a transition period and thats why the telescopes were having such problems in Quality control.

To put it in perspective, i have a 2002-2003 purchased Meade 8" lx-90 EMC. It was made at the irvine factory and has never had a single problem since day one, and since then i have been using this very telescope. Perfect optics, perfect workmanship, perfect GOTO computer, as far as i can tell

So its not the factory where they're building it at, its the transition from irvine to mexico that caused the problems many telescopes had.

Now they're just back to normal, producing semi-flawless SCT telescopes. Who knows maybe in another year or 2, meade might get their quality back up to what it was back in the early 1990's. But of course, as we all know, meade is in a rut right now financially.

The PST I received is nice optically but there are some QA issues as far as the quality of some of the insignificant parts. But the optics are clean and I am happy with the views. Even though it is from Mexico, it still has the Made in the USA sticker on it. I wonder if they will ever change that?
