Hi,
I love my 15x70's - they get a lot of time out. But they're heavy and require a tripod. What do you recommend for high quality grab/go astro binocs that are handholdable?
Additionally I had the 15x70's adjusted to be usable for my prescription of -8 to -9 diopters, I'd want a pair that both has very long eye relief, and large diopter adjustment and/or the objective could be recessed for my prescription. Any suggestions? Thanks -
Dan

I share your love for the 15x70 Ultras. Under dark skies I get LOTS of nice views of open clusters, nebulae, Andromeda, etc... Though they're on the large side, I find I can use them grab-and-go without a tripod. I sit in a reclining lawn chair (with arm rests) on my deck and brace my arms and legs, allowing me to handhold the binoculars and enjoy some long views without bringing out the tripod. I also find this more comfortable than holding my face up to the right spot against a pair of binoculars perched on a tripod. Just tonight I pulled out the ultras and spent 15 minutes observing the moon before bed time. No tripod, setup, etc....
Notwithstanding all of this, however, it's still good to have a smaller magnification binocular for "normal" handheld observing. I like 7x for that application (scanning large pieces of sky). I'm currently using the Obie 7x56 binoculars - not the same quality as the ultras, but for $100 they satisfy my need for a scanning handheld binocular. Of course, if they ever offer a 7x50 Ultra, I'll be first in line to buy a pair .

7x50 "Ultra" are offered by several other vendors of the same range.
Are you sure your Obies are not 8x56?

Thanks, Edz. I wasn't aware of this before. Someone else has also pointed me to a review you provided in this forum in the past for these WO binoculars. Are these any different than the Orion Resolux 7x50s? They look very similar, but I note that the WO 7x50s cost around $75 more.

AFAIK, the WO7x50 is the only one advertised as having ED glass. None of the other Ultra/Signature/Resolutx/Etc. make that claim.

As far as stargazing goes, ED glass will NOT show more faint stars as seen in a Fujinon 7x50mm or a Nikon ProStar 7x50mm, correct?

ED glass will typically show a much finer, more well corrected image. That is not just better color, but finer pinpoints. That improves image contrast. The WO7x50ED certainly does that.
