Zeiss old epīs, still among the very best? new
      #2575837 - 08/12/08 03:04 AM

Since iīm on the look for a ep in the 3.5mm range, iīve been browsing various sites. Came across this Zeiss Abbe Ortho 4 mm 1.25" for 650eur(im not getting it, to expensive for me). Not cheap by any standard. I for one can appreciate the feeling of having a genuine Zeiss ep, but is it worth it in a sense that you can get two TV epīs of the very best quality. Still i do consider the sheer feeling of having one of these epīs very nice. Itīs a very expensive feeling though.

akemag:

I have a couple of the Zeiss Jena Orthoscopics (0.965"), a 10mm from the early 80s and a newer 16mm. The 10mm isn't multi-coated but rather has single MgFl coatings on each air to glass surface. The 16mm is multi-coated. The 10mm actually outperforms the 16mm by a hair. I have no doubt that the Zeiss 1.25" Orthoscopics are even better.

Regards,

Jim

It would be very nice to try out some of those. Iīm considering getting a Huygens 16mm marked Jena, which should be Zeiss Jena i believe. Price is about 60$, much for a Huygens, but since my noname 20mm Huygens can produce some pretty sharp views from time to time, i wonder what this could show me.

I have a pair of 4mm Zeiss 1.25" orthos and have used them pretty often. Excellent sharpness and contrast but terrible eye relief. Someone warned me before I bought them that I'd be doing a lot of lens cleaning and it certainly can be an issue.

I use my Pentax 5mm XO a lot more as it is every bit as nice an image, costs a lot less and has a smidge better eye relief. You could barlow it for really high power if 5mm is not enough. The 6mm Zeiss Abbe is another barlow compatible choice to reach 3mm but you are back in the megabucks area.
