fwiw, haven't seen this posted in this forum before:
http://www.eetimes.com/news/latest/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=198700125&pgno=1
It's basically a tear-down article on the SS's internals and specific components used (component list in excel format here: http://i.cmpnet.com/techonline/uth/Vol_2_Issue_1/PartsLists/Celestron_SkyScout_Parts_List.xls
Some ramblings:
* Overall component cost is very low (I won't be surprised somewhere in the order of 1/5 to 1/10 of MSRP)
* GPS chipsets are in the $10 range or less
* the HAL (magnetic) and accelerometer sensors are of the basic variety; conversely, higher-spec components could be used to increase pointing accuracy.
* imo it's likely that Celestron could integrate part of the SS technology into future telescopes at a low cost to them - let's just say even at a basic level in which SS technology augments a RDF, so all do is setup a scope and turn it on, and it will automatically slew to 3 chosen stars for Sky Align (into a RDF range, user will still have to center it for now).
***edit - xls linky fixed, had an extra ) at the end of it

core : very interesting stuff. I've been wondering about a lot of the technical details of my SkyScout!
Thanks. But the second link (the Excel one) does not go anywhere for me.
