I've got Binocular Highlights, but his Moon books (one published just a year ago!!!) including the Rukl atlas, are virtually impossible to find. Why is that?

Good Question.
The moon atlas is a very fine book. Total shame it is a rare book. I think I bought the last one available anywhere at the retail price. I spent months searching for it. Now it's impossible unless you have very deep pockets.

this Rukl atlas... is it by Astronomy magazine? came out in the late 80's early 90's?
if so, how much is a copy worth?

Revised and edited by Gary Seronik and republished by Sky Publishing in 2004 ISBN 1931559074

The 1990 edition had red page numbers and grid lines--invisible in a red flashlight. Dumb.
The 2004 reprint went to colored grid and black page numbers. Smart.
This is, IMO, the finest printed Moon atlas.
It is out of print, though. I hope S&T republishes it soon.........hint, hint.

I have a 1990 edition--is it really worth $1000.00, as the listing on ABE shows in the above link?
Yikes! To think that I marked my copy up earlier this evening with a highlighter and pen.

Related to the original topic--
I like the writing style of Gary Seronik--tight and precise. He does not waste words. In one sense, his Binocular Highlights is poetry. I wish he would take on more writing projects that produce printed books.

The 1990 edition is available for >$70 depending on the condition. I've seen it show up on Ebay during the past year and go for less. The newer 2004 edition is the one listed on ABE. It's been there for a good while. It's only worth what someone will pay for it. Does seem extreme. The original retail was about $45.
Read the listings carefully. Sometimes they don't specify the edition or the ISBN number.

I have an old edition of the Rukl atlas (it wasn't old when I bought it). It has the Astronomy Magazine banner in a little box on the cover. How did publishing of the atlas pass from them to S&T?
I don't think the red lines were dumb. I mean, who uses a red flashlight when looking at the Moon? It's not like your night vision will get wrecked. I use a dim white flashlight for Moon maps.

I _just_ found Rukl's Moon atlas at the local Half Price Books. They charged me a whole $7.98 for it. ;-)
Every once in a while even a blind squirrel finds a nut. I guess that the moral is that these books are only rare and classic to _us_. The general public thinks of them as just another science book that they don't care much about. Haunt those used book stores!

If it's in good shape it's worth more than you paid for it, unless you take it to Half Price books! They don't have those here!
You can sell it on an EBay auction, or even Astromart.

I love astronomy books, especially atlases, and a real pet peeve of mine is that when a good book suddenly becomes out of print, greedy booksellers will list them for (pardon my pun) astronomical prices like that.
I've seen the same phenomenon with other useful but out of print books like Hynes's Planetary Nebula, Clark's Visual Astronomy and the Millennium Star Atlas.
