misalignment
      #2578311 - 08/13/08 06:47 AM

Is there any way to tell if the optics are misalingned other that a star test etc. The atmosphere has been so turbulent that I can hardly see the diff ring in focus and when out of focus there might be some slight (real slight) decentering of the rings. Sometimes I think I see it and sometimes (change of eye placement) I don't see it. What makes me think that what I'm seeing is real is that when I think I see it I always see it at the one o'clock position. again even then It is slight to the point that I'm not 100% sure that I'm seeing decentered fresnal rings.
scope is 120 ed (not an EON)
Power used 225x (4mm)

for 15 or so bucks buy a collimating tool (eyepiece) made specifically for a refractor.... I picked up the phone and got one from Hands on Optics...

with the front lens capped you want to see a single dot....
if you see 2 or 3 then you need to get out the Allen wrenches screw drivers etc... This is assuming the scope has collimating screws....

It doesn't have collimating screws. I just want to make sure that the lens is indeed missaligned before contacting orion. Also does this tool indicate missalignment of the lens or just of the focuser?
