We had a fair amount of rain in the evening but by about 9pm the clouds disappeared and the sky was very transparent for where I live. I got the 100mm Quantum 90 RA binoculars out and began my observation session with M27. This planetary looked superb under a magnification of X20 and was the finest I have seen it in a long time, and pushing the magnification up to X30 did not improve the image that much. I saw no hint of a dumbbell shape just one large oblong shape. The ring nebulae was easily found but looks quite small in a pair of binoculars but was still very impressive and worth visiting. M13 was outstanding and again very nice with a large hazy appearance but no stars resolvable. The M92 globular has a very bright centre and again very easily found but no stars were resolved. I also saw M39 which is an open cluster in Cygnus again worth a visit. I really enjoy using binoculars now for astronomy they are easy to use and also a surprising amount of objects can be seen when you learn your way around the night sky. I can safely say that I am now a binocular convert.

Are these binoculars a larger version of the 88mm model that was marketed a couple of years ago by various vendors?
Have they been reviewed?

Mark, yes these are the larger version of this model they are very good but like all binoculars of this size you need a good tripod to carry them. They cost £850.00 so they are very expensive but well worth it especially when the sky clears and really dark sites are accessed. They are mounted on a u –mount that is adequate but could be better and the aluminium case is of poor quality. The case handle broke when I was carrying these binoculars and they crashed to the ground so I was expecting them to be completely out of collimation but they weren’t. I put a metal plate across the handle holder and it is now very secure, well that’s my thinking anyway. I think the Chinese do something’s very well but do not finish everything off to a high standard which is a great shame. Having looked through various sizes of this type of binocular I am more than pleased with the quality and they are definite keepers.

Interesting that you couldn't get partial resolution on M13. In my 26x100's, I see a fair number of fine star points across the face of that globular. Others that are not to hard to partially resolve include M22 and M4.

Glen, I live just outside London and the light pollution is bad, if I take them out to a darker site, like most things optical they improve dramatically. This report was from my back garden about 11pm at night and using the X20. I had them out last night till about 2am because we had some clear skies and the view was much better especially later on. The very faint stars could be seen but not very well. Where I live the four stars in Hercules are just visible so it is not the best place to observe but beggars can’t be choosers.

Thanks for the report - I've been eying these up, or something similar, myself recently. I agree about the London factor, I actually live in London and despite the light pollution last night was fantastic!

SkyG, I live in Wanstead near the flats with lots of open spaces but it makes very little difference, except I dont have any street lights to contend with. Ace cameras sell these and almost every other type of large binocular, I would also try Rother valley optics, they are very good. The widescreen centre in London also sell them but I would give them a miss.Steve.
