Stone Tavern Farm's "Stargazer's Weekends"
      #2580555 - 08/14/08 09:37 AM

Hi CN'ers!,

This coming Labor Day weekend will be the inaugural "Stargazers Weekend" at the Stone Tavern Farm in Roxbury NY. Those of you who have been to the "AOS Starfest" know that the Stone Tavern Farm is noted for it's amazingly dark skies, along with the warm hospitality of the Burrows family. This combo makes for a perfect match for amateur astronomers in search of quality dark skies, and a little comfort too.

As it stands the B&B is STILL available for Friday and Saturday, but I can't promise that will last much longer. So, if you were thinking about going up to enjoy the skies please call John and Danielle Burrows at;

607-326-3600 to make your reservations now!

The other options for the "Stargazers Weekends" are listed on this web site;

http://www.catskillevents.com/

Camping fee includes electricity hookup, and full use of the facilities.

I hope to see a lot of CN people there!

Great news!!! I had a wonderful time at your well organized Star party (5/30-6/1) and the B&B breakfast was fabulous not to mention the wonderful dark skies (when it cleared.) I'll be at other astronomy events in Aug. and Sept. but am looking forward to Oct. Great to see you using this wonderful site more frequently. BTW, I did post some pictures of the Star Party in this forum following the event - for folks who want an up close look.

Hi Maureen,

I'm so glad you enjoyed our starparty! The Stone Tavern Farm will now be open on a montly basis during the good weather months for Amateur Astronomer to use as a dark site. Our traditional Star Party with speakers, and raffles, astronomical activities, and all the other goodies will take place in or around early June of next year, but the site is so perfect for observing that I am really proud to announce that it will be available year round.

That's great Geoff. It really is a great site. One question, though. If I think it might be too cold (for my retired bones) to camp out and if I don't want to spring for the B&B, is there a "third option" i.e. pay a fee to attend but sleep in a nearby motel?
I think it's great that the place will be available year round. There are certainly other dark campsites in the Catskills BUT you can never be sure about light pollution from your neighbors or even the owners of these sites. I'll be sure to let our club members know since it is only an hour away from us in the Mid Hudson Valley.

Hi Maureen,

That's a good question. I'll check to see what they want to do. It's all about having a good time observing!

Will give it a try. Keep in mind the weather was so-so but folks can get the idea. BTW, don't you have some even better pictures from last year?
I think it's a great site and, this is a big point, it's in a reasonable distance from the NY Metro area.

Geoff,
This is awesome! I knew we had the ability to head up there, "unofficially," whenever the weather looked cooperative, but to see it stated officially is great.

I really think Stone Tavern is going to take off in terms of being a dark-sky haven for observers in the NYC-metro area. Honestly, the skies are awesome and I would rather pay the extra money and only drive 2.5 hours than 5+ hours to Cherry Springs (no disgrace to CS, it's just too far). Plus, after spending 5+ hours in the car I'm usually wiped out and the last thing I would be considering at that point is doing an all-nighter. Plus I have to take a full-day off of work to head out there with enough time to set up before it gets dark, to get a good spot on the field and to have enough time to grill up some dinner.

With Stone Tavern I can take 1/2-day from work on a Friday, get home, load the scope and camping gear and be up there by 5pm with plenty of time to set up the equipment, do dinner and relax before it gets dark.

I know where I'm planning to head for September and October's New Moon weekends!

Hi Rob,

Now your talking! I'm really stoked about having a place that we can go and observe in comfort. Having a nice warm fire to sit in front of when I'm done observing is going to make the October weekend that much more enjoyable!

Maybe they will put in some scopes under domes? How about a 20-inch RC?

BTW, do the horses leave anything in the observing or camping fields?

Hi George,

The idea for future expansion would be to put small "observer cottages" with either a poured concrete pad, or roll-off roof observatory attached. There's a lot of potential for the site but we really need the support of the astronomical community. Stone Tavern Farm is a business, and will respond to the needs of it's customers. If we can show them that we're willing to come up then they will respond in kind. Right now I have NOBODY coming for the holiday weekend. That would be a bad start considering all the effort that was put into bringing this site online.
