Hi all....
Thought I might post a pictorial of the difference hand picking subs can do. People may wonder if its worth the time and effort, i'll let your eyes determine that. This first image is quality set to 90%, gradient method used for alignment. Of 600 subs, registax picked 422. The subject is the Sun taken with a BF600 Lunt CaK blocking filter on an 80mm ED APO scope with a DMK monochrone cam
Next is the same subs, though handpicked through the 600 subs. I took around 250-350
10 best registax subs stacked:
In my opinion, Registax does a pretty good job of selecting frames for stacking but by no means is perfect. It can save time when you have 2000 subs lol. But hand picking subs in a practical number of under 500 subs can be done relatively quickly and provides a substantial improvement in sharpness.
Hope this helps someone

I am generally between 1600-800 The target is different and the amount is also different
And strictly choose a single piece quality, is a key

I think it would help if I learned how to make the best frame the reference frame...I see an option for that but how to do it is not very user friendly Any tips?

H'm, this I agree with! Registax software at I/O interface up, really have an inconvenient place The raw recruit isn't easy to control
Hey Hey, this is also let everyone have a target so research of opportunity

Suggest raw recruit The default constitution of software can attain a simple target
Cautiously choose a good single piece a picture Can raise quality
However.......Take a lot of time....

Try this...
1. After doing and initial alignment be sure to move the slider all the way to the right. This will include ALL frames. They will be sorted but we want to include everything. The initial sort can be thought of as sorting everything to make a good reference frame... which is just what we will do now.
2. Press the LIMIT button. Create a reference frame stack of about 50 frames. Registax will take the first 50 frames which it previously sorted and assumes are the "best" for now.
3. Once the reference frame has been stacked, apply a very slight wavelet to bring out just a little detail. Don't over do it at all. Click "Apply All" and then "Continue".
4. Now you will click "Optimize" so all the frames in your list will be sorted against the newly created reference frame.
5. Once the optimization is complete GO BACK to the Align tab. Move the slider so that you include about 3/4 of the total frames. Click "Limit".
6. Create a new reference frame (same number of frames) "apply all" the SAME wavelets (don't change the values) and "continue". Click "Optimize".
7. Once it is complete... repeat by clicking the align tab again, move the slider to include about 1/2 of the total frames (the frame list you see here is the total frames NOT the limited frames you were just working with). Click LIMIT and go through creating a new reference frame again.
Once you have at least 400 to 600 frames in your limited list then it is time to think about stacking. Before you do the stack though, run one more optimization run but this time also run either your resample or drizzle. Once this is complete you can stack.
Basically what you are doing in all these previous steps is to continually take the first 50 frames which Registax says are the best and use them to sort (optimize) the next set. Every time you create a new reference frame the program fine tunes the order of 'best' frames. This routine should help give you a sharper image. Keep in mind that the total number of frames stacked can have a substantial impact on sharpness and resolution as well.
Here in Colorado we either have the Jet stream right over head or we have turbulence coming off the mountains so seeing is ALWAYS horrible. I have never seen a clear diffraction ring when trying to collimate.
Hope this helps! See if it works for you.

Now, to continue the experiment, pick the best ten images...or just enough to give you good S/N. Process it, post it. Let's see the difference.

Thaat is awesome Nyx! Now run the final stack (unprocessed or stretched) through PixInsight or PS. You should also se post processing improvements as well.
Cheers!

Added the image using registax's best 10 subs to the original post..had to use slightly less wavelets however. Seems to have a greater effect when you use only a few subs.
Good suggestion trying 10....i thought that'd be too few but I think it looks the best of all 3

Nice! I knew the DMK was a pretty clean camera, and it's not as if the sun is all that dark. Taking the best frames to the point where you are satisfied with the S/N will always be the best way. Why stack 1000 frames when the best handful will do the job?
