I was going to post this in the refractor forum but...
It's a local craigslist ad, and I'm wondering if it's too good a deal to be true?
After all the poster says he isn't into ASTROLOGY, so he may not know the real value of this scope! Hate to take advantage of him. Only $1000!

Yikes,
I hope the best offer is $150ish
That would be quite a bad deal for sure.

Rocco-
Looks like a decimal error to me... assuming blatant unfamiliarity isn't at work.
But then, the "dangerbarton" email add'y conjures images of robots with flailing arms bellowing warnings to Will Robinson...
Proceed at yer own risk.

In Craig's List, I see a lot of overpriced telescopes. The one exception to that is the one for the SF Bay area. For some reason (and maybe it's Orion?), that Craig's List seems to get more telescope ads by seemingly-informed sellers than any of the others I have read (Of course, I haven't read ALL of the other ones).

Hmmmm... the market pressure of GOOD information & its availability / accessibility?
... or a relative dearth of inexperienced buyers regionally?

$100 wouldn't be a bad deal for that scope actually.

Even before I knew the value for sure.............$1000 seemed a little, ah heck who am I kidding, really high for what you get. I think it is a decimal error as well.
Hopefully this guy is not that crazy to think someone does not know what the scope is worth.

You wanna see bad deals....try the Seattle craigslist. I can't believe some of the prices. I'd like to post an ad telling some of these people a pawn shop will be your best bet because no one's going to pay that much for that.

The decimal error was obviously the first thing I thought of also, but it's in there twice...once in the title of the ad, and again in the text.

I've been looking on eBay at some of the telescope prices ... and some of these people are selling above list price for a new scope. Has anyone had experience buying on eBay? My first inclination is to avoid it altogether.

It basically works, if you're careful, and know what it is you're actually buying. I've purchased a few things on ebay. Latest optical thing was my Baigish (russian) 12x50 binoculars. (Actually works out to being more like 10x50...) They have some problems with internal reflections at night on brightly lit sources. I haven't tried them on the moon yet, but that may be a loss. Otherwise they're actually quite good, especially compared to the chinese 7x50s that I used previously. They're cheap binoculars, of course, but pretty decent as cheap binoculars go... I've gotten pretty attached to them. Paid around $30 for the set.
Occasionally I've seen a Pentax J60 on there (which is an old Pentax achromatic refractor), and am always really tempted to buy it.
