For a 8" SCT, i would go with a 2x barlow, TV plossl 11, 15, 32 and a Pan 24 (used).

Even if i upgrade later on, they would probably be keepers or be sold very easily

This post is also running on the eyepiece section. That is where it should be continued.

Sorry, but did not intend for it to be a duplicate thread, the one in Eyepiece is for all types of telescopes, here its for Cats only; if not allowed, please pardon my ignorance and my being a newbie. Thanks.

Don't be sorry, we all astronomy is an ever learning process whatever we do.

Just found it funny to see how dedicated you were to solve this. You really have a lot of energy.

I;'d buy a complete set of either Orion Stratus or Baader Hyperions whichever went on sale first....

well not a complete set...I'd start with a 6 or 7 mm for high powered views....

Can't beat them for the price and they just plain "work" in my 8" SCT...and I have a couple of XW's and a Pan that I compare them too in the same scope...not quite as good as the high end glass BUT very very close ...

I'd have to agree with Bob. I might stretch to a 31mm Aspheric and space out the rest to keep within budget, though . . . 8, 13, 17, 24 are all good choices, I think.

Hi

One good used boxed set of Brandon eyepieces:
32mm, 24mm, 16mm, 12mm, 8mm

can be had for about $600-$700. (~$1100 new)

This would give about 80x to 300x for a CAT with about a 2400mm fl. Add the excellent 2.4X Dakin Barlow for about another $120.00 used. (~230.00 new)

The Brandons are superb for all sorts of viewing (~50 deg AFOV) and it is hard to beat their absolute contrast, deep resolution, transmission, and tack sharp focus. This goes for virtually any telescope, by the way.

You won't be disappointed.
