Help! Attaching my telescope to a UA Unistar mount new
      #2581691 - 08/14/08 06:07 PM

This is a bit embarrassing, but I can't figure out how to mount my WO Megrez110ED refractor to my UA Unistar Deluxe mount and tripod. I got a set of 114mm rings. The rings have five holes at each end and two screws for attaching.

My Unistar mount accepts either of my two DUP plates that fit quite nicely in the jaws. I have a long plate and a short one, both with many holes. I assumed the holes on my rings would match up with the holes in the plates, but no luck. I can't get any two holes matched up. The holes are all too big for the screws except for ONE hole near the ends of each plate, which doesn't seem reasonable to use. I would think I would need to attach the rings with 2 screws for stability and it would seem odd to attach with one screw at the far end of a plate.

Am I missing the obvious? The plates are DUP plates and were recommended for the Unistar. Do I need some other kind of plates for rings? I am just puzzled and frustrated that something that I would expect to be easy - attaching my telescope to a mount - is difficult.

Anyone familiar with a Unistar mount and ring attachment - I would GREATLY appreciate your advice!

You might want to give Larry at UA a call. I wish that I could help you. I've got 2 UA mounts, but both of them use a 2" x 8" plate with a slot down the middle of it. I pass a bolt thru the slot & into the bottom of each ring, tighten them down and the OTA is then attached & ready to use.

I have sent an email to Larry at UA as they are closed now. I have clear skies today - which is not all that common here in the NW.

I am having a difficult time picturing the holes in the rings and the plate. It doesn't sound like the plate matches the rings very well. But as long as it feels solid it sounds like you could use one screw on a ring on each end of the plate.

Maybe a couple of photos would help.

You can easily use one bolt per ring, it doesn't matter. The stability comes from the ring and plate being completely flat to one another. One bolt is more than enough. My Megrez rings are bolted to a dovetail plate with only one bolt per ring, and that's more than enough.

Think about this: A Meade AR6 OTA cradle is held on to the dovetail plate by one bolt in each end. The four adjustment bolts only go against the flat, and the whole cradle is raised anywhere from an 1/8" to a 1/4" above the dovetail plate. That ota is 27 pounds, and so far I haven't heard of any scopes falling off yet.

If you are worried about stability, drill holes into a plate that match the holes in the rings. That way you won't have any worries.
