Vista Home Ultimate x64 Time Sink!
      #2582051 - 08/14/08 09:21 PM

Microsoft and ASCOM have teamed up to yield endless hours of frustation. My main software for image acquisition is:
Maxim DL v5
TheSky Pro v6
Focusmax 3.4.1
Pinpoint v5
ASCOM for POTH v5.1a
CCDAutoPilot v4

Yup, you get the picture, ALL of them are current releases.
You would think (prey) that the install would be seamless. But NOooo each one has had problems, especially ASCOM.

Just needed to vent. I feel better now.

sadly, you've encountered the Dual Frustration Issue. AFAIK, all the apps you've listed are 32-bit, and can run reliably on WinXP. So there are two issues: Vista incompatibility, and 64-bit incompatibility. And I haven't a clue how to help you work your way out of this morass...

Do any of the apps you installed require custom drivers to be installed? Vista 64 requires signed drivers. Maybe that's part of the problem?

Do you know if any of that stuff runs Vista x86? Generally, other than drivers, the two are fairly compatible for 32 bit apps. For one thing, a ton of the system .dll's are replicated, so you have 32 bit versions hanging around too. Eventually it all thunks down to the 64 bit kernel code (as needed), but for many things you just run the same 32 bit code you would on Vista x86. (This is much more the case on Vista x64 than XP x64.)

I mention the drivers because Vista x64 won't actually WARN you that it's not loading your drivers. It just doesn't do it if they aren't signed.

What made you decide to go with Vista x64? I like it - but the issue with signed drivers is really a drag in some cases.

Maybe they just never tested ASCOM on an x64 system? There are some differences, most of them trivial to work around, but you do have to test it and work them out.

Yes Rusty. I think this laptop will be an in home model for a few years. Photoshop and stand alone apps work well. Try to get the 5 I listed above to work together is going to be a waste of time.

Scott, all of the apps claim to be Vista ready. Of course that doesn't mean Vista 64. The devil seems to be in the details. Boy are you right about the lack of warnings about drivers in vista. It just quietly ignores you efforts.
The 64 bit OS was a surprise. I frankly thought I was getting a 32 bit OS.

Fortunately I have a "beater" Dell with XP that I can use to run all these apps perfectly. I was trying to have it two ways

I'd bet it was some type of driver issue. There's a FEW other issues that one might run into in porting stuff to run on x64, but for the most part it should just work.

Sorry to hear about the x64 surprise. I don't actually understand the implementation of the "Home Ultimate x64." So if I'm a power-gamer, and want to install a 64 bit OS, I am almost certainly going to want to install unsigned beta drivers, at least for graphics. For a server in a data center, this is a sensible restriction - but those probably aren't running "Home Ultimate..."

If you do think it's drivers, you can bypass the security in a couple of ways:
1. Connect a kernel mode debugger.
2. Opt out of driver signing checks at boot time. Hit F8 at boot time to bet the menu of boot choices. (Yeah, you have to do this each time the system boots - it's annoying.)

Here's a thread about it:

Wow Scott Thanks a ton!

I will give the a whirl. If everything fails, I'll continue with my original plan of using RAdmin on the 64 bit box to control the XP32 laptop for image acquisition.

I have this feeling like I'm close to getting this to work.
The ASCOM Driver set is Key though. Most of the guys on the Yahoo ASCOM group feel like its doable.

It is kind of nice having access to 4megs of RAM for a few apps like CCDStack. Makes processing STL image files a little easier

No prob John.

If the F8 opt-out of signature checking works, let me know and I'll post how to make it always ask you this at boot up using bcdedit. I haven't tried ReadyDriver, the program listed in the thread. Honestly, I'm not sure I would try it, at least without knowing a bit more about where it came from and who wrote it. On my 64 bit Vista box, I just the on-boot opt out. (Which is super annoying when I work on it, because I reboot the system a fair amount.)

Having lots of RAM is nice. I'd actually use Vista x64 on my development machine, but my companies VPN software doesn't work on it yet.

Good luck - I hope you get it working!
