Help, I'm addicted! new
      #2568906 - 08/08/08 04:52 PM

Yesterday I came very close to spending most of my savings on a second telescope. I almost bought a Celestron 130 SLT as a grab-and-go scope to go with with XT10.

It must have been because it was the scope was actually on display in the store (stores that keep astronomy related stock, even a small selection, is very rare over here) and the Goto capability would be very handy.

Luckily I decided to resist the urge and do some research first - which turns out that I wouldn't like the 130 SLT due to various issues.

The moral of the story is that I was prepared to blow my budget on a second scope that would be a total (unneeded) luxury. So I guess that officially makes me an astronomy addict.

I think I'll stick to expanding the XT10's accessories for now.

I fairly confident that you could leave off the last two words and still be correct.

That fact has probably saved me a fair amount of currency.

Don't encourage me, or put more ideas in my head.

BTW, how does a refractor compare to a reflector. Never had to opportunity to look through one myself.

All Springbok"s welcome!
First off don't rush off & get a second scope! Get the needed accessory's first soo when you do get a grab & go your all set! Anyway the xt10 is a GREAT scope. OK heres a "got to have" checklist:
1 observing chair (I can't live without one)
2 red light to keep your night vision
3 a good night sky atlas, need a map to find your way!
4 CN to keep yourself educated!
The got to haves are not expensive, soo after you can start thinking of wide field ep's, filters, & all the fancy gadgets that make this hobby easier & more fun! AND if I forgot anything in the got to have checklist I'm sure the CNer's will chime in. G'luck Shawn

That's what happened to me! Got an ST80 to suppliment my 8" SCT. Never had a refractor that I could see through til now. Oh boy, do I like refractors now!! Now I want a 100mm...it's the same continuing story, no matter what you get. Addicted? Who, me?

It's not that I'm actually looking for help. It's more a resigned acceptance of the fact that I'm now officially an astronomy addict - clearly exhibited by my willingness to spend loads of (unbudgeted) cash on extra astronomy related stuff.

Crusader,
The idea of a 2nd scope is pretty common (i think!-or at least that is what i keep telling myself). I bought a 90mm refractor as a 2nd to go with my 10" dob to use when i didn't want to take the time to move the larger scope outside--basically the 2nd scope was a grab and go. The thing is that i use 2" ep's for my dob, and i ended up getting another set of 1-1/4" ep's for the 90mm. Then a barlow, then a better diagonal, then some filters, then a new mount, and on, and on. Plus i have added several books during the same timeframe. I don't think it ever goes away or stops. I have only been in the hobby since last fall, but i now have gone a full 2 months without purchasing new "toys" or books. There may be hope yet that the monster does sleep sometimes, but just anytime that new catalog or email will come in and roust him from his slumber. Believe me, you are not alone. I don't think this purchasing thing actually ever goes away. I think it just rests awhile every now and then.
Hi, my name is Mike and i like to purchase new toys for my scopes. I have gone a full 2 months without a purchase. Now exactly where did i put that catalog with the new 20" dob......

It's not the 2nd one that's so bad . . . it's the 3rd, the 4th, the 5th and the 12th . . .

Very true.

Looks like the purchasing bug is in full swing for me. Just phoned the store to check whether they have stock of accessories I'm considering (hoping they wouldn't), but they do.

Here's the list:
Sky-watcher LER Eyepiece Set
Sky-watcher Red Dot FInder
Sky-Watcher X2 Deluxe Barlow Lens (with camera adaptor)

So looks like I'm going to be spending some money after all. Just need to do some research into whether the products are good enough quality...

Skywatcher Evostar 90mm F/10 Refractor on AZ3 mount.
25mm and 10mm Sirius Plossl eyepieces, Skywatcher 8-24mm Zoom EP. Orion O-III filter & Shorty Plus Barlow.

Pick up a 24mm Panoptic.

I recently acquired a 102mm refractor to complement my Dob. I had that scope out last night for only the second time since getting it. I am fast learning the strengths and weaknesses of a 102mm refractor.

Almach, how are you finding your new Orion 102mm f/7 ED?

I've got the sister version from WO. I'm quite happy with it - it's a good complement to my dobber.
