I didn't see a post on this, but has anyone seen the prices for the LV and LVW eyepieces at www.telescopes.com? I ordered an LVW 22 for $129 and an LV 6 for $63. They've been discontinued. Get them while they last. I have no connection to Vixen or telescopes.com. Just wanted to pass along a great deal! Enjoy!

IMO, the $112 price on the 30mm 2" 60° is a steal. If I didn't already have two, I'd get one for sure.
It's a great ep, and fits in nicely with the other LVW focal lengths, again, IMO.

Folks;
These are some of my favorite eyepieces for lunar and planetary observation. I would highly recommend jumping in there if you have a focal length or two you are trying to fill in your set of eyepieces.

Love those! they are made in Japan (bet the new ones will be out of China).
Just "firstlighted" a LVW 5 on the Moon last night on C925 (470X), I was floored!
I`m getting the LVW 3.5 to complete my collection.
Thanks for the tip!!

All, You might want to check out Vixen North America’s blowout of remaining LV and LVW’s. If you like the pricing listed here, You'll like VNA’s even better : www.vixenamerica.com

John-
I was fortunate to have nabbed one of them from there some time back when they first saled... at this point it looks like all that remains in the LVW flavor is the 3.5mm... likely not as popular a FL Yet that's a good price, fersure! mike b

Ordered 2 22mm. For those interested in binoviewing, Orion had their binoviewers for $88 on the Bargains Galore page yesterday. Put the deals together ands this is about as cheap as I think you could possibly get into binoviewing.

I don't know about any new LVW's, but I have three focal lengths of the NLV's (with the twist up eyecup) and they are still made in Japan.

I heard that the baader hyperions are clones of one of these eyepieces, or maybe its the other way around, cant remember.
How does the LV compare to the hyperions?
I notice that some of the eyepieces on telescope.com cost more than others...i guess they are doing the pricing according to how many eyepieces they have left in stock.
63 bucks for a 6mm....thats 6 bucks cheaper than the vixen north america price of 69.

darn i kinda answered my own question looking through the stats...
#
Eye Relief: 20 mm
Brand: Vixen
Clearance: Yes
Telescope Accessories Series: Lanthanum Eyepieces
Telescope Eyepiece Series: Lanthanum Eyepieces
Apparent Field of View: 45 Degrees , 50 Degrees
only 45-50 degrees of FOV....thats kinda low for this type of 5-7 element EP.
Just because the price is low doesn't mean you have to buy it. All the eyepieces you use now will inevitably be replaced by better ones. I would only buy one of these eyepieces to fill a gap in my focal lengths, otherwise if i was looking to replace an older EP, I wouldnt do it.
Oh by the way, telescopes.com has had these eyepieces on clearance sale since all the way back in early july, maybe earlier. I noticed them on clearance back then when i was getting my zhummel filter + ep kit.
This leads me to believe that they aren't selling out as fast as they hoped, so be careful and make sure you really need this ep...dont just judge it on the price.

The Hyperions are clones of the Vixen LVW, a 65 degree EP of high quality, not the LV....these are great prices for an LVW. I don't why you would buy an EP you had no use for, but you would be buying quality at a great price

Thanks for clearing that up, i knew one of them was the clone.
Sadly, it would seem that the baader hyperion is still slightly better than the Vixen Lanthanum Wide LVW Eyepieces. However, if i can grab up a Vixen Lanthanum LV like a 20mm or something, for 73 bucks, maybe ill consider it.
I read the review here on cloudy nights of the vixen 6mm LV compared against a university optics orthoscopic eyepiece.
Despite the vixen being a 5-7 element eyepiece, its a planetary eyepiece. The review also says that the vixen LV had alot of brightness loss compared to the ortho, which made it not so suitable for DSOs. He also mentioned field curvature at the outer 25% of the field of view.
Really though, i would wait it out. There are going to be far better eyepieces coming out within a year from now. I don't want to be one of those guys who have 100s of eyepieces lying collecting dust in a closet, after spending 70-300 dollars on each of them.

The Hyperions lack the very expensive lanthanum glass element that is present within each of the LVW's, so from a technical standpoint alone it is far more likely that it is the Hyperion clone which is going to be optically inferior. Also, despite boasts of multi-coating greatness for the Hyperion, the current general level of technology used in applying multi-coating in China pales by comparison to that of Japan, so this is likely another negative for the Hyperions. I would surmise that the LVW's elements are electron beam deposition coated, whereas the Hyperions are probably only spray (sputter) coated. Generations separate the two technologies. Surface polish technology is also superior in Japan. You get what you pay for.

I still use my ole Vixen 5mm LV (made in Japan) to observe the moon and planets with a 10" SCT (500x). I do not see any "light loss" with this EP. Yes it does have a narrow FOV, but it performs great on afore mentioned objects.

Good to know the new ones are still made in Japan. DLapoint, I bought mine online from several sources: telescopes.com, B&H Photo, Adorama, etc. Found the best service & prices from telescopes.com (alas, a little late...)

I'm not sure where you get this impression from. Before ordering, I read up a lot on the Vixen LVWs, including posts here and professional reviews. Besides some people preferring Pentaxes or Naglers, I haven't found any negative reactions to the LVWs. In particular, the LVWs are often praised for their flat field.
For those annoyed by people relating impressions other than their own, please note I am responding to Brooklyn's impressions of other people's impressions with my impressions of other people's impressions.
