Phillips SPC900NP and StarBlast 4.5
      #2582824 - 08/15/08 10:06 AM

Has anyone used the StarBlast 4.5 with a camera or webcam such as the SPC900NP and had any luck with it at all? Are you happy with the scope in General and does anyone have any pictures that they have taken with this scope?

Any thoughts, suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated, you all have been great and full of advice in the past and I highly regard your comments and experience.

Thank you,
DJ

I have a starblast 4.5" that I image through routinely. It's a very nice scope for imaging if you like wide field imaging. I use CCD cameras though, not webcams. You won't be happy doing planetary imaging with this scope unless you're trying to get family portraits to include all of the moons. I can post some of my shots, though I am not all that great of an imager yet, you can see though that the scope does have the ability to do very well on DSOs.

M8 - 2 min subs.

M13 - 1 min subs.

M20 - I think it was 2 min subs.

M27 - 4 min subs, guiding failed

Like I said though, I'm not good with a camera yet, but the scope is up to the task.

Hi Josh,

Thank you for the response and yeah, that is what I was afraid of because as it is now, that is what my interest are is planetary photos. When you use yours, what is it that you take pictures of mostly and do you have any that you can post? Would love to see them. Also, what type of camera are you using and what do you use to attach it to the eyepiece holder? Sorry for all the questions. lol

Thank you,
DJ

Yep, just edited my post above. Most everything in my gallery was taken with the 4.5 so far. The shot of Mizar in my avatar was also taken with the 4.5 Starblast. When I take photos of Jupiter with it, jupiter comes out to be about the size of my pinky nail, even when I stack barlows, it's not all that grand in the 4.5 Starblast. Now the 6" Starblast on the other hand does fairly decent at planetary with barlows stacked. But it's F/5.0 vs F/3.9 which makes a good deal of difference.

Hi Josh,

Thank you for the pictures, they look great and that makes me feel that much better about the scope. I guess I can leave the planetary object to the 8" DOB that I have. So if you don't mind me asking, what type of camera are you using and how is it attached to the 4.5 scope? Here is a picture that I took with my 8". I also added the picture of Jupiter to the background... just playing around.

Thanks again,
David

I primarily use a Meade DSI Pro IIc and an Orion Deep Space Color Imager and they just slide in like an eye piece. Fairly simple to set up.
