Against All Odds - 1st Jupiter w DMK & 8"SCT new
      #2582296 - 08/14/08 11:30 PM Attachment (19 downloads)

This is my first attempt at shooting Jupiter. Against all odds of a near full moon only 7° of separation away, and low on my Southern horizon. I used my DMK Mono USB webcam with my new Meade 8" SCT. RBG image (s) X 1 min each.
Comments welcome!

Looks good Randall. A bit soft but that may be due to the seeing and/or the moon. After you stack, adjusting wavelets a little seems to help my Jupiters alot and have the effect of making the image much sharper

Thanks, yeah, the moon was very close and I did an extensive manipulation with the wavelets but I just couldn't sharpen it completely. I just got to the threshold then it would get worse. I'm surprised I even got this one.
I tried my Barlow and managed to get the GRS, but the rest of the image(s) were not very good. All in all I was happy with the result. I've been referring to Mike Salway's procesing articles (Registax) and he has two excellent tutorials posted on the web.

How bout focus, could you have been off a bit? For me, sometimes its hard to focus...especially in turbulance, but my motorfocuser really helps and doesn't make the image shake when it turns the knobs. I find it helpful to overexpose so I can see a moon, then get that to the smallest pinpoint I can get. Could be just a bad seeing night tho despite a good image

Yes, I did that too. I focused on two of Jupiter's moons. I remember now that those moons were going in and out of focus very quickly and I had trouble trying to focus with my manual JMI Crayford. I got them so they were at their smallest diameters. I also shot from my driveway that night, not the best spot due to heat bouncing off it, and, if Jupiter was another 5° South, I wouldn't even been able to shoot it. So a little focus problem combined with low horizon seeing conditions and a 33° Celsius daytime temp cooling down to aboout 20° when I shot this all could have contributed. Oh yeah....and maybe some operator error as well!
