Words of Wisdom????
      #2583585 - 08/15/08 05:03 PM

Wisdom?? I'm not sure, but I do want to share that in the process of cleaning my recent concrete dust mess, I took up the "foam" floor mats to vacuum and notice a nasty black mold growing. So, I "cloroxed" it out of existence, and have since applied a coat of deck paint to seal it. The floor is a raised wood floor. You may want to take a peek under yours occasionally.

I'm guessing there wasn't any paint on the deck before, so the mold should only show up on unpainted decks?

Mold and mildew can and will show up on a painted surface as well, an unpainted surface just offers better "tooth" for the little buggers to cling to. Any place that's warm and damp and gets minimal air circulation. Probably best to check under the tile/carpet in an obs occasionally. There's a mildewcide that you can add to paints, I had them put it in the paint for my obs that I got at Sherman Williams when they mixed the paint for me. Lots of humidity here in Texas. Another form of cheap insurance.

I really wanted to install carpet or those jigsaw foam tiles.

However, I get a little water in the corners of the floor if it rains heavily. Damp wood will take forever to dry so my floor has stayed 'au naturale'.

Agreed....any moisture will encourage mold and mildrew growth.

Does anyone monitor humidity levels within their observatories and if so, what do they range?

Thanks

I do and they tend to be higher in the day but less during the night (when closed up).
