How to dissolve optical glue new
      #2584189 - 08/15/08 11:26 PM Attachment (14 downloads)

Hi,

The IR-cut filter is glued to the CCD glass.
Tried Xacto knife scraping the four edge but still can't remove the filter. (Note the filter itself is 3-layered.)
This leads me to believe there must be optical-grade glue in between the filter and the CCD glass window.

Any suggest on how to dissolve the glue is appreciated!
Please note the CCD's chip carrier is plastic. This may cause problem for some methods .

Clear Skies!

All i can think off is Acetone.

Disolves alot of glues.

Theo.

The last time I had to remove glue I used a product called "Goof Off". It may damage the plastic carrier, so what you would have to do is get a fine needle syringe (around 31 gauge) and introduce just a tiny amount under the edge of the glass where you were able to scrape a bit away with the Exacto knife. Just introduce a micro amount, wait a few moments for it to act, then lift with the Exacto. If you are successful in lifting it slightly, introduce more liquid further inside along the glued edges. This is what I did to remove a logo disk from a scope without damaging either the disk or the scope, and the whole operation took less than a minute. Acetone may work using the same technique.

The typical adhesive used in optics is UV cureable. Depending on the type used they can be very resistant to any type of organic solvent. Norland is a big supplier of optical adhesives. You may wish to contact them and see what they recommend.

Heat can help soften many adhesives. Just don't apply too much.
Good luck.

Thanks folks!

It turns out the plastic package is rather rigid and strong. Good news!

On the other hand,
{half-time report}
CCD 3, ccs_hello 0

The anti-alias/IR-cut glass chipped.
Using brute force won't snap the filter off.
Using (my hacksaw) Dremmel with regular cutting wheel, it will take out some boundary-layer adhesive but not all. It implies the adhasive is very strong and is located in between the IR-cut (glass type) filter and the CCD glass window.

Obviously I am at the point of no return.

{Final score}
CCD reset-to-Zero, ccs_hello 1

Dremmel the CCD's plastic packaging from its side to make the CCD window easily accessible. Carefully remove the glasses (many pieces) while trying not to let anything physically scratch the die. (Household) vacuum the chip.
So I have the picture #1.
Don't know if it is dead or alive.

Clear Skies!

Since I was not sure I'd further invest a perfectly good UV/IR-cut in this attempt. I used a regular 37mm UV filter glass and Epoxy to seal the chamber.
Sorry no gas (or Nitrogen) purge .

Camera is back.
Now CCD has been under physical stress, exposed to ambient, "kind of" sealed with air.
It is living on the borrowed time.

Here is the cam:
Polaris USA DX-9263SL
CCD is a nice ICX408AK

IR is allowed in.
See the characteristic pink picture.
