You'll need a Powered Hub (a couple actually). USB has a 15 foot limit before signal loss. Hubs can extend a bit, powered hubs can extend more.
If you only need USB 1, then you can use a powered repeater cable.. These (if I can remember right) can extend your USB to something like 400 feet (Multiple cables connected). But they are only USB 1...
Is there a possibility of a cheap computer left in the observatory?

I would recommend a USB-network converter; that way you can run Cat5 cable between the two.

I have a USB repeater but its only good to 150 feet. Lots of them on the market that do this, but beyond that point I have found far fewer. Any ideas?

I have a computer in the observatory, that I use to network my CCD and AO however, the Optec is serial as is the CGE how can I control them from my base computer in the house without useing a USB extender to get the signals to this computer?

Yep I downloaded it and that will save me many steps to and from the observatory. However, the computer out there is older and the one I am using here is faster. SOOOO, still would like to be able to run the software on this one. BUT, must say that will be a huge help to me. I'll have to load CCDSoft out there to focus and telescope control until I can get the USB extension dealt with. Does this software run over the internet or only on my LAN? and THANKS at least its a step forward.

I can run my entire observatory from anywhere. I use local network when I am local and use internet on the road. It all works fine. You will need something like NO_ip to get into you computer from a remote location. One of my Obs computers is still on Windows 98 and it works fine also.

What is NO-ip?? How does it work sounds good. I looked at their site but don't understand how to apply this to my situation?

It will give you an IP address that you can get back to from the internet to access your TightVNc(observatory) computer. You only need this if you plan to use your system from a remote location.

Not really. Just need to know the ip address of your network.

That is true; however, the service providers have a habit of reconnecting from time to time. This results in a different ip address of the moden used to connect to the internet. NO-IP gets around this by tracking your network/modem ip address and making it available to you with a constant path such as "Peter27284.no-ip.biz". this address will stay the same as your actual ip address changes. I do not know if you need this for remote access to your TightVNC or RemotePC computer, but I use this daily, and it works!

OK that was my reading also but having never used it it was nice to get your confirmaiton. Now I did find a solid USB extender. Its the ICRON rangemaster 2, allows for up to 330 feet of USB 2.0 nonethesless!!! You can get it here: SmartVM 23900 Mercantile Rd Cleveland, OH-44122 Phone: 877-742-4433 Email: sales@smartvm.com http://www.smartvm.com/USB-Extender-C1326.htm I don't know if these guys are any good, I just ordered yesterday so I'll let you all know if they deliver ... I have a UPS tracking number so looks like this is a legit outfit. The gadget is precisely what I was looking for. I talked to OPTEC and they "thought" their was a RS232 to Ethernet converter but I couldn't find one. Lots of RS232 extenders, heck they go up to 3300 FEET thats no typo!!!

Congrats Peter,
Please let us know how that USB extender works out for you. (from experience I know it could take quite a while to get things setup).

OK I have had my ICRON now for a while works GREAT. But it runs hot. The first one I had failed. The outfit I got it from is fantatic. They sent me a new one BEFORE they asked me to send this one back...which is going out today. Really an elloquent solution. Gotta say pretty happy with it.

Hopefull the new one continues to work. I have a USB 1.1 ICRON that has been in use for a couple of years. One half is installed in a weather proof box outside. The whole box runs hot as there is not ventilation. I looked at the 2.0 version but man they are pricey. My application only required 1.1 anyway.

GEFEN makes some USB extenders and KVM's, though they may be on the high side. The HD dual monitor KVM's we use have CAT 6 connections and extend about 150 feet or so. Maybe they have other options...
