Longest exposure w/unmodded Phillips SPC900?
      #2587184 - 08/17/08 07:25 PM

I'm considering picking up the Philips for use as a planetary camera and doing double duty as a guide camera. Does anyone know the longest exposure it will do out of the box? I'm figuring I'll want to go with longish (a few seconds) exposures when in use as a guide camera.

Also, you might validate my assumption here that I'll be better off using the SPC900 for this purpose instead of my current Meade LPI.

Thanks,
Scott

Scott,

I believe it is 1/5 second.

If I recall right the slowest it will take images out of the box is 5 frames per second.

Thanks guys, given such a short exposure length is it reasonable to use as a guide camera? I think I've seen references to doing so, but maybe I'm remembering incorrectly.

I for one wouldn't have the SPC900 has my first choice for a guide camera. Spending several seconds on a guiding exposure is quite common. I think an original Meade DSI is probably much better for that kind of role. The pricer Orion Autoguider is probably even better.

While it is limited to 1/5 sec(?) subs, it will stack up to 10 seconds worth of frames (with Stark Labs PHD Guiding).

I just found a $20 telescope at WalGreens, it works pretty well with my SPC900 for guiding.

Oh, and I saw a SPC900 at Walmart on the clearance rack for $50.
