I've just seen the above binocular listed on an ebay shop in the UK and was wondering if anyone has any experience with this company in the 25x100 size or maybe their clones in the USA. The blurb in the advert goes on to state they will take 1.25" filters to enhance viewing, though they do come with FMC optics. Is this company new to taking on the idea of adding filters to binos or does anyone add 1.25" OIII,UHC filters etc to their binocular eyepieces. I'm guessing the filters screw onto the eyepiece or is their some eyepiece removal having to take place and attaching the filter in the standard way prior to fitting as per a telescope focuser. I could see that this may cause problems with dust/moisture getting into the binocular. Overall they certainly seem to be claiming a lot and in the UK are about the going rate for Chinese made bins in the 25x100 bracket. Anyone care to comment. Thanks Jon Heres the advert. 25x100 on Ebay

Thanks for that PM Stan and link to the reviews. Some reviewers are saying its 50-50 on what sort of pair you could end up with, not good at all when purchasing optical eqpt.so another Giant bino company to pass on should the urge for 25x100 or bigger come my way. The best comment in the reviews was "R&D must be done by a 4 year old."

I quite like my Zhumell 20x80 that were $70 shipped. However, I'd only consider getting another Zhumell binocular if there was a liberal return policy. Another local astronomer got his set of Zhumell binos and they were trash.

50-50 means that one half of it is O.K. and the other half is not O.K. Save up your money and buy something that is better than a roll of the dice.

Based on the experiences documented in that thread , 50 / 50 appears a trifle optimistic by my reckoning !
The plain truth about these cheap binoculars is that even if you get " a good 'un " , it's not really all THAT good , compared with REALLY good binoculars .

< The best binocular is the one you use. >
I've seen that statement banded about for years now .
Personally , I don't agree with it .
I own several binoculars , but don't always use what I consider to be the best !

You're definitely right there Kenny. One day, I would hope to at least look through a Giant pair of Fujinons or Miyauchi 20x100 and maybe compare them with 100mm Chinese manufactured ones and then see what optical excellence is. Until then I'll keep on playing the Lotto I think Jon

Funny, but I've gotten the impression that zhummell binoculars get a lot more iffy in the quality control department once you hit about 80mm. Before that, they're not perfect by any means, either, but after that point I've seen more bad than good about them.

Sure, but I'm afraid to look through a set of really good binoculars. I couldn't afford them.

Nick just returning KennyJ's post no. #2589047 - 18/08/08 06:24 PM.not his last comment. In my dreams, it would be great to own a pair of the Japanese models as above, but like most I'll happily use what I currently own, a 20x90 Chinese made pair. The only and best giant pair I own. Jon

< Great... another snob. >
Nick ,
I hope , for the sake of your own credibility and repute , that you are NOT suggesting that I am a " snob " !
May I suggest that scrutiny of my 9787 previous posts to these forums would help you to conclude otherwise ?
In any event , I am at a loss as to how you can justify refering to JonoW as a snob , just because he made a statement in agreement with my previous post , asserting that I don't always use my BEST binoculars .
THAT is the truth ! -- and with all due respect , you are not in a position to dispute that .
Neither am I in a position to dispute that you " know good optics " , but what use are good optics when the lenses fall out , or the focus mechanism doesn't work , or when binoculars get knocked out of collimation before they arrive at the customers' destinations ?
Maybe none of these things have happened to YOUR Zhumells , but if your sample is as good as you say it is , it seems your case is the exception rather than the rule .
With GOOD binoculars , I very rarely read or hear about things like that happening to them .

I am the other local astronomer Nick is referring to. The 20x80's that came to me were grossly miss collimated..ie two distinct images..I would had to be cross eyed to merge images. They seemed very similar in construction to many others in the same size that I have seen advertised. Along with being miss collimated the right front lens housing was askew probably contribution to the collimation issue. My thinking is that many of these binos originate from the same manufacturer. The difference is how well they are collimated at the factory, and how well they are packaged prior to shipping to prevent damage or a bumpy ride to throwing collimation completely out, and if they are going to a dealer that can inspect for damage, reject damaged goods and collimate if necessary before they get to the consumer. Mine were packaged so inadequately that damage was a forgone conclusion. The original product was probably fine..at the factory. This is the strong point from buying from a reputable dealer like Garrett or Oberwerk. They can insure to the best of their ability that the product you receive was at least inspected and checked out properly. Once in a while, buying direct will pay off, but in my case did not. If I were to buy a generic bino again ..it would be from a reputable dealer. Nick happened to get a very nice pair that throws up great views. bc

I'm not referring to JonoW. I was referring to you, KennyJ.
Some Zhumells are garbage, some Zhumells are very usable. This hobby is about observing, or at least it should be. Completely dissing Zhumell binoculars and not allowing exceptions to your perspective is gear-snobbery.
Respect is a two way street. I respect your insight, experience, and 9787 previous posts. I do not respect any kind of gear-snobbery.
