New street lights
      #2590489 - 08/19/08 12:01 PM

Hello,
The local council are in the process of changing from the old sodium lights to the new low energy white lights. These will be better in that they shed far less light upwards and sideways. An important point, as 5 of them shine into my back garden, where I observe. As they are white lights, they are obviously emmitting right across the visible spectrum. Will this have any effect on UHC filters?

A few years ago I remember officials om Mt Palomar Obs. heaping praise on one of their local cities for switching their streetlights from white to Sodium vapor claiming it significantly reduced lp.
White light doesn't sound like an improvement to me.

What works for many pros using large telescopes may not work for amateurs or even those pros who want to observe in the very wave lengths that the LPS puts out. In Bill’s case, “less light” is good, but “white light” may be bad. I’d be happy with “less light” no matter what the color of the replacement.

If the new lights are of the proper design they will be a big improvement. The lights in the complex where I live have been just replaced. The new lights are light emitting diodes that are shielded so the light goes straight down. There is no light shining up at all. It all points toward mother earth not the heavens above. You will be happy if they use fixtures similar to ours.
