Asterism Lists??? new
      #2574737 - 08/11/08 04:17 PM

I'm looking for asterism (both officially and unofficially named)lists I can download or print out. The lists I'm interested in should contain the constellation its in, stars associated with it and coordinates. These would include binocular and telescopic asterisms.

I have already checked out the Saguaro Astronomy Club site, "Asterisms-Night Sky Atlas" and a site "d.ramakers.googlepages.com" as well as the NGC/IC project site.

Any help will be greatly appreciated,

Mr Q

You might want to check out the "deepskyhunters" yahoo group. Members actively search and post new asterisms (as well as other deep sky discoveries) and in the files section is a comprehensive list of asterisms. You have to join the group, I believe, to access the files though.

The SAC database has a great list of asterisms thanks to the efforts of Steve Coe, a fellow CN'er!

Sue French mentions asterisms in her Sky & Telescope column. Some are pretty neat. Might be another source to look through.

The deepskyhunters don't seem to answer membership requests (I'm still waiting). But I got their list through private mail. There is a recent thread in the stellar media forum: http://www.cloudynights.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/2468403

Thanks guys for the links. I have checked all already and am currently waiting membership approval from Deep Sky Hunters, which I hope, will help me out in my quest.

If anyone else has any links other than the above mentioned, I'd be greatly thankful for them.

So far, I have a list of 110 via the Saguaro site but understand there are many more available. Trying to find them is the problem. If I or someone on the forums can come up with a better list, posting it on this site I'm sure will be a great help to all who use it.

Thomas - When I signed up, I got the impression that they are trying to keep out the "riff-raff" with the questions regarding why you want to become a member. I can see their point if this is true but sometimes being too selective is not a good thing also. If I do get in, I will mention that you are still waiting but don't hold your breath!

Out of focus - Sounds great! Thanks for the time and trouble. Anxiously awaiting that PM Mr Q

Out Of Focus - Thanks again for the list you sent via e-mail.

Thomas - If you could not get a membership to the group, how did you get a "private mail"??? on the list you did get, how many were on it? Over 100???

I just found out that the Deep Sky Hunters Club has a list of over 1200 asterisms. Still waiting for membership approval. This list would be the definitive list of all lists???

Nice field views of those asterisms Dave. Is there any more of the 100+ known asterisms on this site?

Wow 1200. I saw it as alot, but didn't know it was that many. I couldn't be bothered to count.

Many of the objects that I've seen on this list are quite teenie tiny. Far from binocular objects for sure. Very nice but small.

Why don't you look for asterisms the way many of the members of the group do. Pour over DSS plates and pick them out. Then, actually go out and look at them to see if they warrant any attention.

I don't even remember needing to apply when I joined DSH. Try not to appear too eager. It's a bit of a turn off for most people. Good luck in your quest.

Hi there! I'm a member of the Deep-Sky Hunters group but I have not bothered reporting new suspected clusters / asterisms for a number of years now. At least 23 asterisms bears my name (Karhula). There are so many juxtapositions of stars out there in the sky that the human mind connects the stars.

Timo - Though I have only been waiting for a few days for membership approval in your club, others have told me they have been waiting weeks to months to get approved. Do you know why the long waits?? Mr Q

Why don't you just send an email directly to the DSH-list owner Bruno Alessi? I personally got an invite to the group so cannot say either this or that about waiting times.

And as Timo said, there are a lot of asterisms in the sky that look pleasing to one observer but not to the rest. Out of the hundreds of asterisms I've viewed, only a handful are actually worth it in the telescope.

Tom - I was interested in only asterisms but that list is a nice one that I will be using to augment my other resource lists. Thanks

As for the asterism list (a definitive one), seems like the one I have that contains 110 is it. As one reply post to this thread mentioned, just going over charts or while observing is another way to pick up some more.
Sounds like a good idea but what I see as a good asterism, someone else would probably not. So I figured that obtaining a definitive list would include all current asterisms known world-wide. I have to agree that some on my most extensive list seem to me to have little resemblance to what they were named for. So I guess, considering this, I'm at a point in my quest that will not produce any more officially named asterisms than what I have (110).

So I'll leave the question open for someone to come up with a list of more than 110, if there is one out there.

Well Thomas, I hate to inform you that after a couple of weeks, I have been approved as a Deep Sky Hunter member as of today. So I'm wondering if perhaps you messed up somehow in your application request to join? Mr Q

The moderator of Deep Sky Hunters told me that he has been away from the group a long time and that the pending membership requests are removed automatically by Yahoo after 14 days. Thomas need to resubmit a request again.
