Hey guys, as the moon was... filling the sky and i had not much else to look at, i decided to try my new 66 APO and i was real please with some shot of the moon. So why not try it against one of my Camera lens, i was real curious. So i took a shot with both. The Sigam was fitted with a 1.4 TC to be able to reach the 400mm (388 for the 66 APO) so it became a 420 at a possible f/4. But i choose f/14 because i had a choice and none with the f/5.9 66mm APO This is with the 120-300, shot at about 400mm at f/14, no tweaking at all, 10% compress for the web. This is the 66mm APO, i had to tweak this one a bit to remove the glare around it.
In general, i'm very impress with the 66 APO, it's a 400$ scope compare to a 2400$ one.
Tomorrow i will try the 300 Canon f/2.8 and the 600mm heavy beast just for fun.
Cheers, Benny

Very very close to my eye. Shows you don't need to spend $2400 to shoot the moon!

I fully Agree Warren, like you, i just happen to own those lens... so why not have a try. I see some difference, of course the 120-300 is slightly better in contrast but not by much. I'm very impress with the W.O. 66 APO, it's amazing for the price.

Hi Ben, have you tried DSO's with your camera lenses yet? I'd be curious how the Sigma would do. The fast f stop and zoom range would be awesome for some of the larger DSO's and regions like Sagittarius and Cygnus.

You caught a UFO in the top left of the first picture. Looks like a bird in the middle of downstroke.

Ha ha, i'm so noob Warren that i can't wait to see my first DSO... Sadly, since I bought all my gear it's been so horrible out there (weather)that they didn't see much use. Now it was nice last weekend but the moon was almost full, always something in the way....
Believe me, i can't wait. But good news, i'm leaving tomorow 500 miles north east in a very remote area, light should not be a problem and weather look perfect. So i will sleep daytime and spent my night learning and looking. I may try a few pictures with the 300 f/2.8.
Cheers, Ben ps.: yes, i have seen what's In the top picture, that black spot, and it's not the lens!!! I wonder?

I'm curious too. I have the Sigma 100-300 f/4 and I am itching to try it out as well. But like you, the weather hasn't been cooperating much. My new GEM will be here tomorrow too, so that means it'll rain for a week.

Yea, i had an f/4 not so long ago, great lens! I don't know heck about astrophoto but i'm shure we can get some very interesting image with modern DSLR and good lens. The 40D with it's LIVE VIEW is something kind of new in DSLR.
A 300mm f/2.8 can gather a lot of light, more than most refractor. Anyway, we will see.
Cheers, Ben
