I need to get a red filter for my laptop screen. Has anyone used both the 1/8" thick red acrylic and the "Rubylith" plastic sheets? Which works better? if any difference. From my reading it seems that the red acrylic is better from a maintenance perspective and is more durable. What do you think?

The acrylic or plexiglass is also generally darker than the Rubylith, which is especially good these days since most LCD displays are much brighter than they were even just 2 years ago.
They are easier to mount and maintain.

I agree with Bic - having used both, I prefer the acrylic. I use rubylith on my PDA.

Another vote for acrylic. Both offer equal darkening, but the acrylic is so much more durable.

Another vote for acrylic. I have to agree that the acrylic is so much more durable.

We use 'rubylith', which the print shop we got it from calls 'red acetate'. It's far superior to trying to work with red cellophane.
We are a bit 'lucky' in that we have an 'underutilized' retired grandmother in the vicinty, who likes to sew. She sewed up some wonderful sleeves with the rubylith on the front, and backed by some sort of felt like material. It works great, just slips over the laptop screen, fit's like a glove, and is tight enough there's no light leakage a the bottom. When we left on our 'star party vacation', we had two for each of the computers along (I had 3, chris had one). When we got home, we had none of the spares left, at the events folks snatched up our spares to 'solve' bright laptop screen problems.

The nice thing about the acylic is it fits flat against your screen which allows you to get better focus than a film which may be wavy.
I use a high tech way of mounting, rubber bands

Here is a company that was recommended by the folks on the ATM newsgroup. 1/8" seems to be the preferred thickness. The company will cut the Acrylic to size.

I have seen that at the musical instruments/concert supply store. It's used for stage lighting effects. It looked like it might be more durable than the Rubylith. Does it wrinkle easily?

Astro Gizmos sells various sizes to fit most laptops. I got mine at a star party but they also have a website.

How would I mount the acrylic sheet where the laptop lid's latch hooks stick out from the top edge of the lid? Mike

Thank you for all the great info. I will go with the acrylic from Astro Gizmo. The laptop red screen cozy is very nice too. Now just one more part for my C11 to make my system complete.
