I told a friend of mine about stellarium but he is having trouble setting his location. He tells me he is unable to click on the map to choose his location. I really can't remember how I did it. Can anyone tell us how to set your location. Also are there any directions on how to get the best use from Stellarium? Thanks

point to the general area you are in and move the mouse wheel up one or two clicks. then re-position your mouse arrow to be a bit more accurate. As you move the arrow around you'll see the locations of each of the little dots on the map. I just chose one fairly close to me and clicked it. Then hit save location, and type a name into the blank and click OK.
There's a manual for it on the stellarium.org website...some good stuff in there.

It's a pain to use the map.
Go to C:\documents and settings\<username>\application data\stellarium.
On my laptop the location is "C:\Documents and Settings\masraums\Application Data\Stellarium"
You should see a file titled "config.ini". If you open that file (it should open in notepad) then you can edit this section with your lattitude and longitude.
From mine
[init_location] name = home latitude = +29d 32'17" longitude = -95d 13'0" altitude = 0 landscape_name = guereins time_zone = system_default time_display_format = system_default date_display_format = system_default home_planet = Earth
If you don't know your lattitude and longitude, this page will give it to you (in the US) http://world.maporama.com/

If you're trying to set your geographic location, your observatory, click on the tool button, (the wrench), then the location tab and have at it. It would help if you knew your coordinates ahead of time. Google earth can help you there.

Be aware that in the new development version of Stellarium (v. 0.10.0) is still in beta, and last I checked the location map doesn't work under Windows Vista 32-bit (this was as of last week.)
The current operating version is 0.9.1, and functions properly.

Another way to find your coordinates (longitude/latitude)is if you have access to a clearsky chart free on the net for your location click on the topo map just below the graph and it will direct you to a different page on that page look to the left side and it will give the long/lat for the location of the graph you were just viewing.Hope that helped, and Google earth is good to.This is just another way I found to find my cooridinates. Here's how I work with Stellarium, since the map can be tricky. 1. Go to the NOAA's Geophysical Data page and type in your Zip Code. It will automatically generate your latitude and longitude. 2. In Stellarium, click on the wrench, then click on the location tab. 3. Use the up/down arrows to set your latitude and longitude, then click save location. That's it.

Your location in stellarium doesn't have to be 100% accurate.
As long as it is within the 5-10 miles radius of where you live, its accurate enough to see whats going on.
Look at a map of your town, then look at the map in stellarium.
Stellarium only uses bigger cities as Dots on the map...so decide which towns are near your area and what directions they are in.
For example...i live in a town called marlboro NJ. East brunswick township is in the stellarium map, and it is NW of my town. Freehold township is also in stellarium but is southeast of my town.
So what do i do? i zoom in all the way between the dots of east brusnwick and freehold....and i put my location dot right between the two of them. It is more than enough accuracy.
Stellarium RULES!! out of all the star charts this is my favorite....since they use REAL 3d graphics instead of just a 2d circular star chart.

Try to reinstall?

Which version are you using? The standard Windows version (v.0.91.0) works fine for me as well. It's the "development" version with the proposed new features that has the borked map. I've tried this on both my computers to verify. There's something flaky still about the beta version (0.10.0). I'm sure it'll be fixed before long.
