I search planet sketchs with 8"/10"/12"Refr.
      #2595765 - 08/21/08 05:41 PM

Hi,
i built a big mount for a long refractor-thats will be can take a 11"f 15 refractor.
but a 11"lens cost many money and i think over,if i am with 8" happyning(that is now my budget limit )
now i have a Refr.5"f20
but i want to see more on Jupiter,Mars(had always small declination in europe and i must wait much years for good opposition )
with ccd-photos i have problem ,thats dont really with visually results

the ccd-photos from Damian Peach(C14,SCT 12") and others are very good but it is real visually final
regards Marc
PS:sorry for my bad english-i hope, you understand my question

Newtons are sure low cost and higher aperture ,but seeing it a problem in the big city and with Dobson guiding is a problem to visually detail. Newtons and Apos have for me to short focal lenght

Homa

I've been using a 10" f4.8 dob refl for observing and sketching planets (Mars, Jupiter and Saturn) for years with excellent results. As long as you have a good quality instrument and pratice guiding at higher magnifications and pratice observing you'll have no problems getting good results.

Hope this helps.

Marc.....I've used my Brandt 8" f/13.3 refractor since 1979. I built everything from scratch. I had a machinist do my mount and I built the OTAs myself. The late R.E. Brandt made the 8" lens and Jaegers made the 6" f/8 lens. This scope is a pure joy to use. Jupiter, Mars and Saturn are stunning! I use it 100% visually. Mike

Hi,
so long you observed(since 1979)
a very nice refractor and mount-have you more detail image of them
have you something sketch of your observing events?

Marc...I'm strictly visual. I don't sketch...sorry. Hope to get into planetary and lunar imaging sometime down the road. I'll post a couple of shots here. But I don't want to over do it for fear of boring some. Mike

Marc,

Many quality instruments exist for observing the Moon and planets. Your current instrument sounds like a nice one. If you can obtain a larger refractor than that would be good for the Moon and planets. A long-focus Newtonian (>F/6) with a small secondary is excellent for the planets as well. Maksutov-Newtonian and Maksutov-Cassegrain designs are excellent for the Moon and planets as well. The best of luck in a future instrument.

Mike- A beautiful set of quality refractors. Your setup reminds me of what astronomers in the late 1800's used to study the Moon and planets. Thank you for sharing them with us all.

Carlos

Hi ,Mikey
very nice mount
which art of bearings you use?
Rect.axis diameter?
steel pipe or steel rounds ?
you use the roll-of -observatory- when you get problems with wind power?(wind still 1> tornado12 )

you not noticed your observing objects-i can not believe you missing not your observed events in long last time?-all you has saved in your mind
the picture (jupiter with 8 inch Apo by Jim phillips)corresponds at approximately your visually nature in best seeing 8/10 ?
i have anyway problem to difficult by jim phillip photos with 8 and 10 inch apo

Hi,Carlos
i am extrem nostalgist
in addition i believe a 8inch f15 Refr. brings the same performance as a 12"SCT in visually view
the C 11 Ota cost ~ 2500 € > D&G 8inch lens ~ 1800 €(=2670 $)
ATM-refractor tube ~ 700 €
the C 14 OTA cost ~5975 € > D&G 10 inch lens ~6000
the ATM big mount is my problem

the earth atmosphere seeing(6-7/10) limit is by ~10 inch

Marc...The shafts are 3" solid steel polished and laquered. The bearings are Dodge brand pillow blocks. I feel that my visual views of Jupiter on nights of excellent seeing easily rivals Jim Phillips' digital pictures when I have my Baader Semi-apo filter installed. The roofs are so heavy that they have not been bothered by 80+ mph winds in 23 years since my observatory was completed. Mike
