I good friend of mine is interested in buying these binos based on the views she got using my old Fuji 10x70 FMT SX. Can I just check that the SX2 is the replacement for this older model and in performance (for astronomy) is at least its equal? Many thanks in advance for any help.

Richard, Around here, we are at least open minded to the possibility than newer may not be better, especially in this age of increased outsourcing. When the new series came out, there was a flurry of doubt. One of our members is a binocular repair person and optical expert, however, and he claims the glass is identical. His only gripe with the new model was with how the dessicant tablets are held in place, which he says is not as secure as in the old.
I own three binos of this series, one old, two new. The new coatings are definitely better. Some people are completely satified with the 16x70, but I find my new 16x70 less than perfect, but have concluded this is not due to a manufacturing defect, but because the design is pushing optical limitations rather hard. Quite a few members find the same thing is true with the old model 16x70, and other similar sized and powered instruments. My old 7x50 and new 10x50 are both simply excellent.
I wouldn't hesitate to get the new 10x70. I think at its lower power, the aberrations that are visible in the 16x70 will be invisible. Ron

Thanks for that Ron - trawling on the web indicates the newer model is a tad lighter too. Richard
