Help Find Mars Polar Lander new
      #2391927 - 05/13/08 10:34 AM

You are invited to trawl high-resolution images taken by HiRISE for signs of Mars Polar Lander, believed to have crashed upon arrival at Mars in 1999. The wreckage may provide clues as to why the mission failed.

Tips on what to look for (CAUTION for dial-up users! This is a 15.1 MB PDF File! You need Acrobat Reader to open it.)

Interesting, but futile. It's most likely under my bed. That's where everything goes when it goes missing...

Well, at least we know where Waldo is!

I wonder if they haven't tried using the MRO (Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter); it has high enough resolution to directly observe the Mars rovers and the Phoenix Lander.

Tim:

If you visit the link ( Looking for Mars Polar Lander ) I provided in the original post of this thread you will see that the images being used in the search are from HiRISE (High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment) which is one of the instruments on MRO. So yes, MRO instrumentation is being used in this project.

Rick:

The blog entries on that same page (link provided above) give an overview of current discussions of this project.

That's what I get for missing staff meetings.

Sorry, didn't realize HIRISE was an instrument array onboard the MRO. In fact, until I saw something about the MRO on Discovery Science this week, I didn't even know there was an MRO. Imagine my surprise!

Well then...I guess it's okay to use it then. Carry on. Nothing to see here.

No, I think the "carpet monster," a nemesis to scale model builders worldwide, got it.
