M8, M13, M16, M27, M51, M57, Vega - Starblast 6
      #2596789 - 08/22/08 02:27 PM

I went a little ape on targets last night.. I need to learn patience though, I didn't stick to any one target for more than a few minutes, anyway here's what I managed(Sorry for the distortion, it keeps happening when I compress and upload images on here):

M8 - 5x2min DSI Pro IIc, Starblast 6 @F/5.0, no darks

M13 - 5x1min DSI Pro IIc, Starblast 6 @F/10.0, no darks

M16 - 6x2min DSI Pro IIc, Starblast 6 @F/5.0, no darks

M27 - 6x1min DSI Pro IIc, Starblast 6 @ F/5.0, no darks

M51 - 4x1min DSI Pro IIc, Starblast 6 @ F/5.0, no darks

M57 - 9x1min DSI Pro IIc, Starblast 6 @ F/10.0, no darks

Vega - 1x1sec DSI Pro IIc, Starblast 6 @ F/5.0, no darks

I didn't spend much time on anything, but tonight is lining up to be a good night again. I will probably stick to 1 or 2 targets through the whole night this time to see what I can do stacking a serious number of subs. I was pleased to see the dust lanes come out in M51 with as short of exposures as I ran, I think it's going to be target number one tonight. M57 started to turn out nice, it will probably be target number 2.

These are really nice!

I love the start you had there on M16; if you find the time I'd love to see it with more subs.

Nice shots , I also have a hard time sticking to 1 target but I never go for more then 2-3.

Are you limited to 1 min subs or can you push more?

Erik,

I can push longer guided, now that I've worked out most of the kinks, I just got target happy last night with the clear skies. Tonight I'm going to really try to just stick to a couple targets and see what I can do with some time invested.

orenabah,

Thanks for the compliment. M16 is one of my favorite objects. I plan to put more time towards it because I have yet to pull any real detail out of it. I had to really push post processing just to get the pillars to show up in the image above.

Great Shots Josh,
Did you use a barlow on M16? It seems to be a pretty close shot. None of my are that close. How did you do it. I am going up to the mountains over labor day and I will try M16 again. Can you give me some pointers?

Dan,

Actually all I did was use the 6" starblast this time instead of the 4.5" starblast like I did on my first attempt. The 6 is F/5 while the 4.5 is F/3.9 so the image comes in much larger with the 6. M57 I did use a 2x barlow. I tried imaging it the other night without a barlow and it wasn't much bigger than this smilely face:

I don't know that I could offer much advice on it other than lots of subs and probably increased exposure time. Every time I take a crack at M16, I don't really get much detail at all out of a short and small stack of subs. It is just too dim of an object. Next time I try M16, it will be my only target for the night, because it seems to need that much time investment to draw it out.

Brent,

I'll give it my best tonight, especially on M51. I've been dying to really get a good shot of it.

Very nice pics Josh.

So you were finally able to get M57 without clouds ruining your shot. Looks great. When you say no darks do you mean in stacking. I thought I wasn't using darks but if you do dark subtract in Envisage I belive it applies the darks to the saved image. If you use another program and use dark frames in stacking the light frames the picture turns out black. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

It looks like that M51 shot would benefit from some more subs, I can see the detail in that shot so if you get any more data be sure to post it (-:. Awesome shots..I can't decide whether M51 or 57 is my favorite of those

Thanks guys.

Doug, I'm actually using no darks at all. I'm having to compensate in post processing due to a problem with my DSI at the moment. I have a long thread on it a few pages in. Basically Meade doesn't even know what to do with it.

BTW, I have about 90 minutes on M51 so far, as I'm sitting here on the patio. I hope it turns out good. I have a lot of stacking to do tomorrow...

Can't wait to see it. I just got in around 3:30am. I started around 10:00 Soaked in the hot tub for a bit while camera was running to warm up a bit. Just a little tip.. Don't try and change color filters just after getting out of a hot tub. It fogs up the filters somthing fierce.. It has gotten cold up here.

You have some good looking images there Josh! In the beginning it is hard not bounce around the sky shooting images. For me it was always a curiosity of what the object looks like in 'my setup'. At this point, the longest I've ever imaged an object is 4 hours 55 minutes. Most of the time I try to put at least two hours into each object but prefer to have three. M16 is very faint for being a Messier object. Centering it without plate solves can take a few minutes. Good luck on the M51!
