Which are stars/which are moons new
      #2591858 - 08/19/08 10:54 PM

Please help, AGAIN!

So, I'm looking at Jupiter, NOW, thru the Burgess 20x90mm and I have never seen so many moons before.

I can count five near the planet and two, maybe three above.

I brought out the Orion 30x80mm and I see the same thing, only the FOV is not as nice as the 20x90mm. (Did "I" really say that?)

So? How many are really moons? I see stars as well, but, the moons appear to be better illuminated.

What up? Before, I usually saw only four moons.

There are only 4 that can be seen. Three on the right in a small triangle, one on the left further away.

WHEW!
The Burgess(not Bresser )20x90mm reminds me of the GO Gemini 25x100mm that I had for a short time, last year.

STARS EVERYWHERE! I think I'm going to like this binocular very much.

Thanks EdZ

Yeah, Jupiter has been hanging out for the last few nights near a 5.9-magnitude stars that mimics one of its moons amazingly well. Tricky!

You can tell the moons because they're lined up very nearly in a row, and on the same plane as Jupiter's belts. It's extremely rare for a similarly bright star to be that close and also be lined up the same.

Yesterday I spent some time studying "The Moons of Jupiter" in the August Sky & Telescope (p. 58). This is a nice presentation of the daily and hourly phenomena of Jupiter's satellites. If an observer ever wants for an observing project--and I cannot imagine how that may be possible--the moons of Jupiter make nice observing with any size binoculars. To preserve the project, post the Jupiter/moons sketches in a small sketchbook (no lines on thick paper) or spiral ring notebook (lines on thin paper) with either pen, pencil, or other art instrument. Don't forget to post your nightly reflection to chase away those pesky daytime problems.

The one I usually mistake for a star is Callisto. It normally hangs out a ways.

I was very surprised myself to see these in my ancient handheld Bushnell 10x50's a couple of nights ago. But I was also able to see three or four through the shakiness.

It's even easier to see the moons if you're using image stabilized binos, even if just 10X.

Kenny,

I think it's time for you to give us a nice report on your 20x90mm binocular.

Now that you have found out that masking it down gives more satisfactory views, I'd like to hear about the 20x90mm and what you can see with it. Please.

Thanks

Stan ,

I think yourself and countless other non - UK residents ought to take into consideration the fact that since August 2006 ( two YEARS ago ! ) one could literally count with the fingers of one hand , the number of nights when the skies here have been clear enough to see ANYTHING apart from an intermittent moon , at least before midnight and when the temperatures have not been around freezing point .

My body doesn't react favourably to the COLD !

For me to spend enough time outside looking at the night sky to warrant any kind of observing report , it needs to be at least 65 degrees F.

Unfortunately in this part of the world , it's seldom so warm after midnight in SUMMER , ON CLEAR NIGHTS , or at any time in the DAY in winter , let alone after sunset .

If I were a really enthusiastic amateur visual astronomer I would have moved to warmer climes years ago .

Under the circumstances , I tend to use my optical equipment mostly in the day time -- if and when it's not raining , which on days when I've not been working , again have been very few over the past couple of years .

These past two years have probably been the wettest here in recorded history .

I also WORK FULL TIME , with national minimum holidays .

In any case , I thought I'd mentioned enough traits and characteristics of my 20 x 90s in another thread to suggest they are not exactly the instrument I rush to take out on the few occasions when time and conditions permit !

I'm not one for listing my equipment in my signature , but rest assured , I have a few binoculars and scopes that I'd rather look through than those 20 x 90s !

Regards
Kenny

Kenny,

So, does ALL that rainy, cloudy, dreary, dark and damp weather dampen your spirits?
Are your joints getting rusty?
Some folks FEEL physically and emotionally CRUMMY under such conditions.
How are you holding up?

Stan ,

With all those emocions littering your post , I'm not sure whether those were serious questions or not , but questions number 1 and 3 would appear to be the same , and the answer is most definitely YES !

As regards the second question , although rusty is hardly the medical term , I do suffer from arthritic joints , particularly hips and knees ( hardly a suprise since for more than 40 years now my job has imvolved walking around with heavy tool boxes and often kneeling for hours on end ) and all this damp weather seems to make the symptoms more pronounced .

Regards
Kenny

To those interested, related to Jupiter Moons and general information about the planet, there is a very handy (and well constructed) *free* software named Jupiter 2. It is available in five languages, highly customizable. The site below (in french and english) presents a lot of info about configuration, with many screenshots, etc. and of course, the download links.
