How's the paper work for blocking out extraneous light?

Pretty good. That's pretty much what I use it for, observing when the moon is bright or the sun is rising. It's not as long as a regular dew shield, only maybe half the length. It's not ideal, but it is light.

I made my own dew shield form a sleeping bag pad; use on a 10" SCT. I bought the pad, the velcro, and the glue for less that $20.00. It's over 12 years old and still does its job.

Did you line it with black felt? Or was the grey fine? I wonder if home depot sells black pipe insulation for a 10in pipe....?

Here is another very simple idea that also makes sure the inside of your homemade dewshield is very black. After checking on sleeping mats, I decided they were too thick and bulky so I found a shop that sells rubber (in the yellow pages) to industrial firms. Took a short trip down to the plant and had words with one of the employees. I told him what the material was to be used for and he suggested a neoprene sheet instead of foam. The neoprene he showed me was mat black, about 3/16th inch thick, and more rigid than foam rubber.
Long story short, I took it home and cut it to circumference with an inch added. I then attached velcro to the short sides (in the appropriate places)using a sewing machine. Foam will not tolerate sewing velcro to it and I don't like using glues (as some commercial shields do) that may be in close proximity to optical coatings so it seemed a better option. The velcro holds the neoprene in a round shape.
I am very pleased with the outcome, and when the scope is being stored, I just increase the diameter using the velcro and the shield slips snugly over the OTA so I don't lose it or damage it.
My solution is bit of work but I liked it so much, I made 4 more for subsequent SCT's I have purchased.

Rob

I'd like to thank everybody, you guys are a fountain of information & ideas! All this assistance and feedback is why I love this forum, & why its the only one I belong to.
Store-bought units range here from about $60 for a flexible astrozap to $160 for a matching meade metal. Seems many members here lean towards saving money (& weight) on a homemade shield. I'm inclined away from a blue metal shield, if for no other reason than having would-be theives thinking I have a bigger scope than I do. I have a preference for the practical & subtle (well, as subtle as a 10"lx200 can get ). I'll check out everybody's ideas & will let you know! Thanks

No lining is used. It is very lite and obsorbs dew; very durable.
