celestron ep set eye relief
      #2598841 - 08/23/08 02:53 PM

I have the Celestron plossl set that comes in an aluminum case. EP's run from 32mm down to an almost useless 4mm. Does anyone know what the eye relief is on these? From the 32 down to about 9mm they are quite comfortable. Yes I know they aren't high quality but they serve my purpose. The reason I ask is I am looking at a set of binos with 10mm eye relief and I am trying to determine what to compare this with.

You might try this question down in the "Eyepieces" forum. I think that plossls, in general, have fairly short eye relief, particularly in the short focal lengths.

I can't tell you the exact eye relief for the plossls, but I'd agree that they're pretty good down to the 9mm eyepiece.

I would figure (extrapolating from eyepieces with known eye relief figures) that 10mm would be fine if you don't wear eyeglasses, but might be a little tight if you do wear glasses. You'd probably want another 3 mm or so for eyeglasses.

I think the eye relief for Plossls is around 2/3rds to 3/4ths of the focal length... in general. So a 15mm focal length would be around 10mm of eye relief.

Also Parker Nite Fly I did a little reasearch on the Plossl set and Celestron DOES NOT give an ER on those. If you will notice I gave you the EP ER on the OMNI PLOSSL it could be the same.I found this disscussion about them online, check out this link, http://www.opticsplanet.com/msgboard/post-28594.html I need new EP's and I am wanting to buy Badder Hyperions but they are over 100 bucks a pop so I need something to use while I save up to buy only the ones I need.I hope this helped.Let me know if you would what the quality is on those,I need to pick up something to use while I save up for some better EP's.You can only save so much so fast on a fixed income,it takes a me little while to save up for the REALLY GOOD EP's.Hope this helped

The numbers are about right for ER, I bought that Celestron set early last year. Other than the small ER upto the 15mm they are not bad, like you WildBill fixed income allows me one EP a month so I have to plan it for the right EP

WildBill,

I have looked through high dollar ep's on a high dollar scopes and obviously there is no comparison. On the other hand for $99 back then ($139 or so now) I got 5 ep's a 2x barlow a handful of filters and a nice case with a little extra growing space. The 4mm is pretty useless in my 8" dob and the 6mm is sort of useable but I have a 12mm that came with the scope and it with the barlow is much easier on the eye. To be fair the 4 and 6 are not recommended for scopes over 100mm fl. I actually like the bigger ep's. I think for the money this is a terrific deal.

Speaking of the 4mm - my son used it with the barlow on the moon one evening. It was like flying over it in low orbit but of course the moon is bright. Still it was cool. So useless depends on what you are aiming at I guess.

I understand about the income - all my glass is Chinese. Still beats anything Galileo had to look through! Well the 7x35's may be Japanese but at $20 its doesn't make much difference.

Parker

Thanks for the info on that.I just got my Nexstar 114 last week, found it used for 200 and it so far has done ok.I have already ordered a 12v AC power adapter and it should be in this comming week. Now I wont have to feed it all those AA's.
I need to replace the cheap EP's.The 25mm is Ok but the 9mm is kind of fuzzy on everything but the moon. They will do until I can get something else.

I have the Celestron EP Kit as well and I love it. I don't use the 4 and 6 very often because I wear glasses and they just aren't comfortable. The 32 mm is by far my favorite though, lol. I use it to multitask on the land and sky, lol.

I, also, have the 5ep/filter/barlow/case accessory kit. Purchased when it was 99usd, to use with a 4.5in f8 newtonian.

I think most standard plossls, of the same focal length, will have very similar eye relief

I believe its a good investment. The 32mm, (lets assume you have a 25mm included ep) 15mm, and barlow are decent. imo the 9mm is as good as any oem included ep, and the 6mm is also useable (f8/f5 newtonians for me). The basic problem with the 4mm, of course, is the eye relief; but, the younger you are, the less it may matter.

Good viewing,

Dave

Plossl designs have eye reliefs around 0.7 times the focal length.
Focal lengths under 10mm are pretty tough.
Many short focal length Plossls have a barlow lens internally, resulting in the turning of a long focal length eyepiece into a short focal length eyepiece.
The Meade Series 5000 "Plossls" are an example--the 5mm has a longer eye relief than the 9mm because it is functioning more like an 11mm eyepiece, eye relief-wise.

A 4-7mm standard Plossl requires a corneal implant.
