Moon set on Jupiter
      #2599699 - 08/24/08 01:25 AM

I just came in from a 3 hour session. I am in North Central Illinois and tonight was great. I started looking at Jupiter and one of it's moons was fairly close. After awhile, it looked closer. I know they change nightly, but I didn't realize you can actually see them move! I watched it for two hours and the last time I could see it was 10:54, then it was gone. I am amazed. Is there any sort of moon chart for Jupiter? I'm curious as to when it actually went behind (or it front) of the planet.

As far as I understand, stellarium should be fairly accurate with the moons.

One of the tools on skyandtelescope.com will help you plan for moon events like that one.

Last night the moon you refer to passed behind the planet. A few nights ago a moon transited in front of Jupiter. You could see the small black dot as it passed.

Yeah, Io transited in front of Jupiter Friday night. A member of the Astronomy club that I am a member of caught it with his webcam. It turned out very well.

The Jupiter2 program that kaaikop posted is neat. I use it every night too.

Isn't it amazing how quickly Jupiter's moons change. I'd second the recommendation for Stellarium. I've found that Stellarium is accurate for the positions of the moons of Jupiter and Saturn as well as the GRS on Jupiter and pretty much everything else. Not only that, but it's free. Also, I think that many/most of the astronomy magazines have a chart in every month showing that sort of thing.
