Balancing the tube assembly
      #2602133 - 08/25/08 09:11 AM

Hello All ,

I have seen reference to making sure the tube assembly is 'balanced' in some threads and now can't find them

Is there a specific thread detailing this technique and would this be done with the scope fully loaded with accesories : dew shield and diagonal/eye-pieces or is that not necessary ?

(had my first look at Jupiter the other night ...other planets really do exist )

Best Regards

Mark

If your wife will allow you to use the kitchen table and you have a pencil laying around the house you sure can find the Balance point of the OTA in a few seconds...and if you are lucky enough to find a magic marker somewhere around the house you can mark the balance point...

load the OTA up with all its normal accessories...finder(s) , most used EP, diagonal BUT no dew shield..remove the dust cap from the front of the OTA... Remove the OTA from the mount

Place a pencil on the table then place the OTA on the Pencil
move the OTA back and forth until you zero in on the balance point... then mark that spot on the dovetail on the OTA...

When you place the OTA back on the mount I place it about 1/4 inch behind the balance point so that my scope will be slightly rear end heavy....when I run with a dew shield to be honest I normally leave it alone...and keep it in that position BUT I have sometimes just pulled the OTA back another 1/8 or 1/4 inch... If that is not exact enough for you you can balance the OTA with the Dew Shield and put two marks on the dovetail ...
