Green Lasers and Star Parties
      #2610528 - 08/28/08 08:02 PM

Hello all,

I'm considering attending a star party offered by my local astronomy club sometime in the future. On my Orion XT6 I have strapped a 5mW green laser that I use to point my scope when looking for deep sky objects. I use this to get close to whatever I am viewing before I switch to using my right angle finder to zero in on the target.

Would using the green laser to point be considered rude at a star party? I only have the laser on during initial scope pointing before I switch if off. I just don't want to have a situation where I ruin someones long exposure photograph of the milky way.

Check with your star party organizers. In general you always want to ask if you plan on using any laser pointer. Many of the larger parties will post rules on their website. There could be folks there who are doing some astrophotography (AP) in which case lasers are bad.

Public outreach star parties are another story though. For those there is almost never AP going on so their use is OK.

But again, always ask the organizers first just to be on the safe side. Have fun!
