I don't know if this is appropriate here, but I have used this scope and loved it, and it has received many positive comments here on CN. I just received an email from Orion and the Starblast 4.5" is on sale for $134.95 (regular price $179.95) as part of their Labor Day promotion. Shipping is still $25 though. Two Explorer II EPs (17mm and 6mm) are also included along with the EZ Finder II red dot finder. The newer 6" version is not on sale. To me this seems like a great price for a really good quality starter scope. BTW I have no connection with Orion except as a satisfied customer.

To me this is the best place for your post. A substantial sale on a positively reviewed beginner's scope in the beginner's forum, where else would it go?

Which do you like better? A co-worker is considering replacing his son's department store scope (ugh!) with a better scope. I had suggested the XT4.5 mostly because I felt it might be easier to collimate than the short focal length Starblast.

How would the Starblast 4.5" work as a guide scope? Would it be better to get an 80mm APO?

It would make a great guide scope but how are you going to mount the Starblast 4.5?

Let's not forget the 72mm EON also is on sale, as is the 100ED. Best chance to get a 4" Apo new for less than $700 your gonna have for some time.

It works great and here is how I mounted mine:
You get a massively wide field of view and much brighter stars than the traditional 80-70mm guidescopes. This means more guide stars to choose from. Best part is that the tube weighs less than 4 lbs.

Hello Fred
You are the very first person I've heard from that owns both scopes. Which one do you use more often?
