wide-angle 'viewing' - N.America Neb? new
      #2604074 - 08/26/08 03:55 AM

Don't recall seeing any wide-angle shots on this forum of large DSOs like the North America Nebula [NGC 7000] currently overhead after dusk - is it possible My recent shots here via a regular camera lens are hardly instant but I'd be interested in what is possible via long integration video I used a simple red glass filter to suppress my LP skyglow and highlight H-alpha emission without a costly Ha filter

I want to try my little lens around Cygnus next time. I think Rony might also. Perhaps I will get a chance to do it. If so, I will post a sketch...I don't grab frames. Roland

My understanding is that the Mallincam provides a FOV similar to an 8mm Plossl -- so, with a 50* AFOV and fairly high mag, you won't see wide-angle views.

Unless you hook the MallinCam directly to a normal camera lens - like a 50mm. Then you will get a wide field of view.

I get nice wide views with the mallincam, mfr-3 and a 66mm refractor. I will try to dig up some screen captures! I especially liked the veil and North American with a UHC-S nebula filter.

Thanks - could someone explain "Mallicam [imaging CCD] fov = 8mm Plossl" - I thought eyepieces and imaging chips were different media TIA

Last night I got some really nice wide angle views of NGC 7000 as well as the Gamma Cygni nebula complex with a 50mm f/3.6 refractor and an 80mm f/5 refractor and my IIE and 14nm Ha filter.

Haven't done any photos yet but maybe it's time to try.

Place your MallinCam into your scope with no focal reducer and then callup a program like SkyTools on object being viewed on the monitor. Select or define your telescope and for the eyepiece being used create one called "MallinCam" with a 8mm focal length and a 50 degree fov. Then call up the eyepiece view. A circle will appear surrounding the DSO and the diagonal view on the monitor will match the diameter of the circle shown on SkyTools.

This is how I deermeined that the MallinCam acts like an 8mm eyepiece with a 50 degree fov. I experimented with a bunch of focal length/ fov combinations until I got a fairly good match.

If you have TheSky6 you can setup field of view indicators for the Mallincam which are displayed as rectangles.

Under field of view indicators, create a detector with a size of 7.4 x 5.95 and 752 x 582 pixels. I have a PAL chip so you need to use the appropriate values if you have the NTSC chip.

You can then create field of view indicators using the Mallincam detector and your telescope/focal reducer combinations.

Without a FR the Mallincam rectangle is roughly the same size as an 8mm/50 degree eyepiece circle.
