Which barlow? new
      #2611093 - 08/29/08 12:51 AM

I have a celestron ultima 2x barlow. Should I add a 3x or 5x to my collection? The seeing is average where I observe. I get near perfect seeing once in a while. My scope is the orion 8" f/4.9 reflector. SPC900c camera.

As i know you need a 5X powermate for that 8in F5 reflector

With my usual average seeing here in Iowa, I've found that my 2X Celestron Ultima barlow gives better results than my TV 3X.

A stronger barlow is nice, but you need good seeing to take advantage of it. With Jupiter at 24 degrees or lower in Iowa, and having to observe over my neighbor's roof, that doesn't happen often for me!

Location, location, location (and good weather)!

For your typical 5.6-µm-pixel webcam (NexImage, SPC900NC, DxK21), you want to image between f/20 & f/25. So yes, for your f/5 reflector, a 5x Powermate would be ideal. You could also try stacking your 2x barlow with a 2.5x Powermate.

With Jupiter, all I use is my 2x Ultima barlow. I've tried my 3x Televue barlow when I have what I consider good - excellent seeing with Jupiter, and it is just too much magnification. The results aren't that great. The only time I find a use for my 3x barlow is with Mars when its diameter is pretty small. I plan on giving Uranus a shot soon, and I'm sure I'll be using my 3x for it, but with the "big 3" of planetary imaging (Mars, Saturn, Jupiter), my 2x is now the standard with my 8 inch scope.
