I see Siebert Optics has finally released their 40mm CA VP Echelon binos.
Weird design but that 40mm looks good.

Isn't all that information from two years ago.
We had this discussion based on that info back in August 2006
the Siebert units linked above

They were 2" binoviewers with 40mm CA and his newest ones are 1.25" binoviewers with 40mm CA at the bottom and 31mm+ at the top. They would be great with 1.25" eyepieces that have 27mm+ fieldstop using a focal reducer in SCT's etc.

That is an update to his page, and not the old information. To me that means he's finally going to get these produced. I think he initially announced these almost 2 years ago.

I have Siebert black knights and think Harry is great, but his OCA is only 27mm........ His long promised 37 has yet to materialize....

His 40mm CA has, though. I'm supposed to get one in two weeks. Of course I've had it ordered for over a year.

Sorry Hank, you will get a 27mm OCA... It will work in your C8 without an OCA, but all your other scopes will require an OCA to reach focus, and you will be stuck with 27 CA..... Been there done that got the T-shirt. I have been after him for a while to get the 37 out, and the more clammor for it the better.

I don't get the point, Gator. It's a 1.25" eyepiece model, so what would any more than 27mm CA in an optical corrector get you?

What I am trying to say is that putting an 27mm OCA infront of a 35 or 40mm CA binoviewer looses a ton of light, it vignettes in a fast scope......... Its great for a SCT or MCT or anything long F ratio, otherwise it doesnt make sense.... I just put a Peterson Eyeopener on my cat for the same reason.
I love my 45 black knight elite with my cats, but with my F4.5 dob, and a 27mm OCA, I am leaving alot of light on the table....
Hope I expressed myself better, once he release a 35mm oca, and I spoke with him today, and he said he is now a couple of weeks away it will make alot of sense, but for now for fast scopes, if thats the only optic it will be used with it doesnt make sense...

I checked your contention that it "loses a ton of light" with Harry and he says it won't vignette any till you get down to F4.
He says light lost is negligible, but wouldn't give me an actual figure. Maybe it's only 1900 lbs.
I guess I'll find out when I get mine.
I don't have any way to measure a ton of light, though.

Hank, do you plan to use these binos on the Orion 120ST? I'm curious as I have the same refractor...thanks

Sure. My 120Ed and Dob as well. But where they should really excel would be with the SCT , which doesn't need a corrector. Should be pretty good with 40mm plossls.

I sure look forward to your first light report!!
btw...I'm looking into a focuser upgrade for the Orion 120ST.
Do you know if adding this bino requires more back focus or in focus...the Moonlite focuser I'm interested in has two drawtube options and I need to decide between a 2.5" or 4.5" drawtube when ordering.

With a refractor and a bino the drawtube length won't matter. It's the inward travel that lacks, because the bino adds 5 to 6 inches on average to the light path. You will (unless you have a specially designed "bino friendly" refractor) need an optical corrector.
The optical corrector takes care of this in both the refractor and the Newtonian, which has the same problem due to focuser travel being inadequate to make up for the extra light path of the bino.

Thanks for the info Hank...with your info it looks like the 2.5" drawtube is the best choice for my 120ST f/5.

Hank, You're in for a treat ! I looked thru the new viewer a couple of weeks ago at Harry's place and they are great. I don't know squat about binoviewers, but just looking thru them at daylight objects I could see that I am going to need a setup !! Wayne

I've known and been buying from Harry for many years, and in my conversations with him on these, he is as close to being ecstatic as I've ever heard him sound.
Since I also have his Black Night standard 22mm CA model, I'm looking forward to comparing the two.
