Hi all
Another quite nice night on the 29th August, with the WSZ and NEB outbreak on display. The seeing improved as the session went along, however it was cut a little short just after meridian flip when the temperatures dropped suddenly and caused tube currents to distort the image. By the time I'd cooled the mirror again it would've been behind the tree, so it put an end to the session.
There were also a couple of nice pairings of the Galilean moons, with Ganymede and Callisto very close together on the West side of Jupiter, as were Io and Europa on the East side. I've got a few avi's of those conjunctions which I'll get around to processing in the next day or two.
12" newt on EQ6, 5x powermate, DMK21AU04. 30fps for 55-60 seconds each channel. Approx 600-700 frames stacked in each channel.
The images are in reverse chronological order (the last image is from earlier in the night when the seeing wasn't as good).
Thanks for looking.

Amazing as always Mike. Would you say that every size scope (newts, SCTs) have tube currents to some extent that impact imaging?

Thanks Joel.
Regarding tube currents - absolutely. Whenever there is a difference between the mirror temperature and the ambient temperature, you'll get tube currents and a boundary layer of air sitting on top of the mirror which will distort the light as it comes through.
It matters not whether it's an SCT or a Newt - however some designs lend themselves more easily for active cooling to help eliminate those effects by bringing the mirror down to ambient temperature.
I've recently added active (peltier) cooling to my 12" newt to help bring the mirror down to ambient, especially during these (southern hemisphere) winter months when the temperature drops very quickly after sunset.

Thanks for the info Mike. As I discussed before, I'll be buying a bigger scope in the future (11 inch or 14). My whole astronomical obsession is planetary imaging. No DSO or visual. Looks like to get the best results possible, I'm going to have to bite the bullet and add a cooling system. I'll keep my fingers crossed hoping Celestron comes out with a cooled SCT in the next year or two, but I'm not going to hold my breath. Man, the detail you got in the NEB and SEB is amazing.
